Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Importing a bike into Ireland

I'm in the position at the moment where I might have to go home to Ireland to work , currently living in Munich.

I recently bought a Vulcan 1600 Classic and I'd like to bring it with me. I heard something about owning it for 6 months abroad, but I can't remember the rest.

Can anyone tell me the best way to import my bike without paying the huge VRT bills ??

    Did you buy it new?

Im not certain but I think that if its less than 6 months old you'll have to pay VAT on it aswell. Barring that I think just use the VRT calculator on revenue.ie.

Yep, I bought it new. The shop registered it to themselves in July 2007, a little trick they do here to get some sort of tax discount.

Do I have to own it myself for 6 months ?

Yep, owned and used - as in taxed/insured, and acceptable mileage increase in the period of ownership, with documents to prove.

When transferring residence, you can import the bike within a year (I think?) of moving. You may be able to use this to your advantage? Do some research on www.revenue.ie

Dry weather my hole, I brought my bike out in the rain last saturday

Mind you it was the only bike on the roads for some reason. Ze Germans have a pathological fear of getting their bikes wet.

Oh, I didn't mean you, KTRIC ;) but seriously, how many H-Ds or the like do you see in the ads with a mileage of 2000 per year or less. Waste of money to buy an expensive bike and then not ride it.

    Scrap the cap!
