Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Fill in the blank

Right, this is our itinerary so far and we need one more place but are having a hard time deciding. Australia is probably no longer on the cards due to budget constraints so we need somewhere between New Zealand and Canada.

We have 6 weeks and €40/day each to spend.

    India - Nepal - Thailand - NZ - BLANK! - Canada

My girlfriend is suggesting adding a week onto three places and then spending the remaining three weeks in Australia but I think that's a bit meh.

    Any suggestions?

As long as you've enough time in NZ ( Id say it deserves 6wks, 8 if you can afford it ) then maybe go to either Fiji or Tonga. Hawaii and Tahiti are beautiful islands but they'll blow a budget big time. Fiji has a regular backpackers circuit with beach huts at good prices, restaurants etc and on 40e per day each it wont blow the budget, you might even have some spare change to go scuba diving.

Another option could be to fly into LA and use the extra time to see Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, San Fran, Orange County and maybe even a sneaky trip over to Vegas for the Grand Canyon/Hoover Dam before heading north to Canada. You'd probably need a bit more than 40euro per day each to do this though but also the dollar is weak at the moment( no guarantee of that by the time u get there though ) You might scrape it by if you dont go lashing out on luxuries like casinos/Grand Canyon Helicopter rides, etc

Or you could even split the 6 weeks up, spend 3 in Fiji and then go on a jaunt up to Alaska before going to Canada.

Firstly thanks again for all the input!

Yeah we heard from friends that NZ was the business so we're giving it 8 weeks. I actually have some relatives in Hawaii but they are sort of religious pyschos and I don't think I could hack living with them (mass on Sundays, grace before meals etc)!

We had sort of given this a bit of thought but I gather the price of car hire is very high over in the states especially for those under 25 (I'll be 23 when we get there). I'd imagine that would be the only realistic way to get around especially if taking in Yosemite so do you think even €50/day would do it? Also, I should have said that we'll be there around January/February; what's that area like during winter?
Or you could even split the 6 weeks up, spend 3 in Fiji and then go on a jaunt up to Alaska before going to Canada.
Now this sounds very appealing especially since I'm sure we could get by on less than €40/day in Fiji. Would the budget be an issue in Alaska? It's a place I'd really love to go but I had just assumed it would be too expensive.

I found Fiji quite expensive and a let down to be honest. Too many flashpackers and the beach we were on was meh. The outter islands are meant to be nicer but I still felt we were getting ripped off when I was there.

But you might want a beach holiday after driving in New Zealand for 8 weeks! hehe

Definitely stop off in San Francisco. Very interesting city, apart from the hippy hobos everywhere. But you're into your herb so you'll like it there. he he

"flashpackers", lol. I'm definitely using that one!

Most things I've read have been in agreement with what you said; inner islands and resorts minging, outer islands loverly.

How much are you budgeting for that?

How about filling the blank with Samoa? (Hope I've got my geography correct here!) Friend of mine went there on a RTW and said it was really good.

Have been looking into Samoa and it sounds like a great place for a budget rtw destination. Do you know how much your friend was spending a day on average and where he/she flew from to get there by any chance?
