havent had a chance to contirbute yet , but here is my story so far ;-)

after a year of learning and finally realiasing that room acoustics and treatment should be the first thing you do before choosing your gear ,

here are the pics and clips of the evolution of my tiny home studio.

I track live drums in here , and the acuostic treament has transformed the mic sound and the mix position sound .

please take it from me - treat your room first ! no mic . preamp or monitor is going to make up for bad acoustics - if you cannot treat the room - mix on good headphones .

    here are the pics

here is the first recording I did in the untreated room a year ago -
i play drums and wanted to get a great drum sound - not so great though!
( its loud so watch it ! )

and here is after a year of attempting to improve the room ( with rubber matting ) and my mixing ability .

so - after treating the room , and suddenly hearing everything much better
here is a quick rough recording , live drums , note the performance is all over the place as its a test
in the new treated room .

take it form me , i learned the hard way - if you treat your room, you will not believe how easy it is to get a decent sound in a mix.
I still have a lot to learn - but this is a total rebirth )-)

    Tish,

I'm a sometime poster/lurker here and on DrummingIreland.com (I'm PearlSMX over there)... so I've been following your progress with interest. It's great to hear the MP3s - what a difference.

I got some great tips from the folks here before I set up my own home studio (about mics, pre-amps, DAWs etc). I based all of my buys on the advice here, so I think the gear is well capable of delivering... Digidesign 003, Behringer pre-amp (OK, it's only for toms!) AKG D112, matched NT5s & SM57s). The folks here all gave me the same advice about acoustic treatment - the gear will make no difference if the room sounds sh1te.

I covered the basics (in terms of sound proofing - so that's not an issue) but it's a pretty crappy sound inside -acoustic treatment so far is minimal. Although I'm a complete novice to recording, I know the room acoustics need to be iimproved before I get the sound I want.

My current sound is not even as good your first MP3, so I'd love to get the benefit of your experience here... any chance you could post a guide to the things that made a real difference? It's great to get a drummer's viewpoint here - although I wil be recording other instruments, my main objective is to get the best drum sound I can.

    Thanks
