Wehrmacht Photo Album - Belgium & France in May - June 1940
-
13-06-2008 2:37amOne area of militaria collecting which doesnt get much coverage here is documents, stamps, postcards and photographs & photo albums. So here are some from the photo album of a German soldier moving through Belgium & France in the Blitzkrieg of May/June 1940. The album has 205 pictures so here is a selection of some of the better ones.
(Any information on locations, units, insignia, vehicles or other details would be welcomed)
There are multiple shots throughout the album of the same car accidentally caught in several different locations parked at the side of the road so it appears that the photographer was travelling by car, possibly a staff driver.
Aircraft - Downed and crashlanded some RAF being stripped / repaired by German mechanics.

Excellent! I enjoyed looking through them, nice to see some pictures that arent the 'usual' ones, ie the ones you see on every website, or every book. Out of interest, how much did such an album set you back?0

I bought it as part of a package with other items so its hard to say (including various pictures a book and documents and so on).
Originally the seller was looking for €250 for the album alone, in the end (as part of the set) it worked out a good bit below €200.
Though if I had bought it alone €200 was the best he would do it for (which for a 205 pic album isnt too bad imo).
Most of them have pencil or pen writing on the back and so on which I need to get deciphered and translated at some point to work out the chronology and their path through belgium/france etc. The downside with it is that the pictures are not that big - they tend to have 4 per page, some pages 5-6 or so.0 -
Excellent stuff, have some scans of similar private photoshoots, but have no copyright, so can't post it up
So what you can see is /from top/:
- Fairey Battle Mk.I /? Sqn/
- Fairey Battle Mk.I engine
- Potez 63-11
- Potez 63-11
- LeO 451
- Fairey Battle Mk.I /?/
- 15 cm sFH18 Howitzer
- 10.5cm leFH18 Howitzer
- the 2nd picture in "German graves" looks like French and British graves, or the helmets looks like French and British Mk.I
- Pz 35/t/ Skoda
- Sd Kfz 251A
- Sd Kfz 251A
- Pz I, A or B impossible to say
- Pz II Ausf c
- Pz III E/F /?/
- Pz IV C/D /?/
Am open to corrections here...
Hope this helps a bit0 -

Thanks a lot for posting that - I will have to go googling all that later. Re the 2nd graves one - I noticed the helmets after posting them - stil not sure why they would dig them (2 french soldiers) individual graves and put a border on them (similair to how they did fellow germans) also in comparison to the x6 people french grave it seems like a lot of trouble. Unless maybe the french pow's dug and dressed the graves maybe. Thanks again for that info - exactly what I was looking for.0 -

I have a little bit more information on the album from deciphering the writings on teh backs. The officer on horseback here is General Herbert Loch:

1939- 1941
General Officer Commanding 17th Division
1941- 1944

1944 General Officer Commanding 18th Army, Eastern Front
1944- 1945

1945 General Officer Commanding Higher Command B
_______________________________________________________________
Though this also doesnt seem to add up as the writing on the back of the photo says 'Mai 1940' and the word 'artillerie' is visible unless the writer knew him from there and didnt know of his new position.
This officer here :
http://s287.photobucket.com/albums/ll135/zwanzig_photos/Wehrmacht%20Photoalbum/?action=view¤t=FotoAlbum0220.jpg
who is in quite a few pictures is named something like 'Pann**zich' I thought it might be Pannsozich but from googling it doesnt seem to be.
I think it says 'IR III 55' on the back but I will check later.
I have since come across someone on a different forum who specialises in France may june 1940 aircraft who has a picture of a plane with the same tailnumber (white 48) as one of mine however their pic shows the plane almost completely destroyed instead of having had a forced landing which is a bit odd. Anyway here are some more pics if anyones interested.
