hi guy and girls. just a quick question that im VERY worried about. i had a back injury about 4 years ago because for orders from a bad employeer. i went to the gp about the problem etc and solictors are currently on the case. the injury was 4 years ago and i am now fit and healthy. do you think this would hold back me being accepted at this stage? (surly as long as i can do what they need me to do and im fit and health, is that not enough?)

If you get a note from your gp to say the injury was sometime ago and that you have fully recovered and it doesn't prevent you taking part in physical activity etc you should be ok. There may be a chance they want to see some more evidence considering it's a back injury eg a back specialists report.

Have you had a medical yet?

Gp letter may not be enough - I had a shoulder injury about the same time as you - ended up seeing a consultant at the local hospital - at the medical stage I had a letter from my GP and my chiro stating that I had recovered and no restriction in movement etc - but failed the medical and had to appeal it - ended up having to pay for an appointment with the consultant and get a letter from him - presently waiting to hear if this is accepted as everything else passed - good luck

I had a broken bone in my wrist 2 years ago. I brought a letter from my gp to say the injury had healed and it doest cause any problems.

A week later i was told i had passed my medical.

It might depend on the area of the body that was injured.

It might depend on the area of the body that was injured.

It also might depend on the type of injury also, breaks usually heal quickly and easily and can have no after affects. Muscle injury however can be more prolonged and recurring. I remember reading once that an injury to your shoulders, back or knees will affect you permanently.

Back injuries are dodgy and in my experience all employers ( and not just the Police ) are very wary of them. It may well be required to get a consultants report , etc to show all is well.
You say you have retained a solicitor regarding your injury - a tad off topic I know but it may be worth considering that acceptance into the Police may impact any claim you have - for example if you are claiming for long term damage then passing the Police medical could be argued to have weakened your legal case.
No doubt your solicitor can clarify the position.

I passed my med there this year and I had a bad back from an injury! That was 10 years ago and the doc at the medical told me that plenty of time has passed for it not to bother my application! Mind you I don't have a start date yet lol!!!

This may sound like a stupid question but when they measure your height do they ask you to take your shoes off?

Before you laugh I have a few reasons to ask

    (a) to make sure i wear socks with no holes.
    (b) if they don't ask you to remove your shoes I mite just borrow a pair of high heels from the missus to squeeze in a few extra inches and thin out the old BMI.

I no there's no recruitment or medicals bein carried out at the moment, but in the lull of activity my mind is wandering to thinking of silly questions to bother you fine lads and lasses with.

    Shoes off I'm afraid.

Maybe you could wear 10 pairs of socks to boost your height a bit. :D

He was rejected twice and on his 3rd attempt he tried the sock trick and got in. Did 30 years and retired about 2 years ago!

    Fair play to him.

I know PSNI describes itself as an Equal Opportunities Employer, in it's policy directive 0406.
But why does it ignore point 4 (2) entitled Sex Discrimination, in that it refuses to recruit individuals who "intend to, is undergoing or has undergone gender reassignment"?

I've never seen that asked before, so I suspect you'd have to send in a Freedom of Information request to get the official reason.

Probably worth giving this a wee bump to save unnecessary threads popping up :)

I wonder when the invitations will start rolling out?

  • Registered Users Posts: 197 ✭✭Jb12345

If say next week. They seem quite prompt and to be honest they shouldn't have a huge number to send out at this stage.

Regarding discrimination, if I get in I'll have to have my long hair cut short, thinking about that makes me feel like I'm getting a limb chopped off.

It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make if I get in but I do wish it was allowed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,640 ✭✭✭Homer01

Yeah, male officers must have their hair above the collar unless medical or religious reasons state otherwise.

So join a long haired cult quick :D

That Jesus guy he had long hair and technically Im a catholic and Jesus is very important to us so I need to look like him but not completely because that's blasphemous...

From what I have heard medicals are due to be completed by mid march so I would expect the dates to be issued next week (at latest) to ensure that they stay on course for a potential start date in May.

I was kind of hoping to have received an invite to medical at this stage but nothing yet :(. Not keen on waiting......

To be fair, not much of a sacrifice.
