You must be in the same batch as me, I got my medical pass letter this weekend too. Sigh of relief. Are we just waiting to hear back about our vetting or will it be a case of being invited to the induction weekend?

Have mine next week. Hope that puts me in line for third group!

I think it's more a case of keeping your fingers crossed you'll get a phone call around 3-4 weeks from now for the next intake. The person supervising at the medical happened to be from AC&V and was saying no news from them is good news so as long as you don't hear from them you're grand! Welcome to the club of waiting it out though! Gonna be a loooooong few weeks of waiting for the next phone calls!

I'm awful at this, I hate phone watching lol. Have you passed everything and patiently waiting?

Well I wouldn't say patiently... Lol but yeah I've passed everything (as far as I know, like the woman said, we don't hear from vetting unless there's been an issue!) and same boat as you now, stuck on phone watching duties (or rather we will be when the next batch of calls is due go to out).

From what I gather off here, can't remember which thread though, some people have gotten calls at the start of May. If that's right I'm assuming they're group 2a of the online training and I was in 2b. I know the first group have definitely started but less than half took the position, so a little bird tells me. Will you be reapplying at the end of the month?

There were 48 scheduled to be in the first group, with 41 going to the induction.

The person said to me vetting takes no longer than a couple of weeks and dismissed the idea of folk saying it could take months......mine went off mid march so if yous sent yours off around the same time i couldn't see there being a problem with it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 272 ✭✭Dutch_Rudder

I was part of 2a myself but the calls went out the same week as my medical (I already had the pass letter but SMT takes a week) so there was no chance of getting a call for that intake really! So there's still people in 2a waiting and yeah the way I see it, if we're able to there's no harm in reapplying just in case there are any issues!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,696 ✭✭✭Mop a top

My vetting went off in mid march too. I'll admit it, I was one of the ones thinking it took months to come through!!
I was wondering if we'd be allowed to reapply. I read on here that England and Scotland make you wait 6 months/1 year before you can reapply. I'll be chancing it anyway lol

So essentially 7 places lost and never to be seen again?

If they lose more than a handful I'd imagine they'd either increase the numbers in later intakes or add another intake at a push. I doubt they'd let people drop out in significant numbers and be in danger of not having enough to meet the minimum required for the service

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 380 ✭✭vickmackey

    personal opinion --
there is no way they'd let places fall away as they need as many as they can get -- they have funding for certain number, so they'd just adjust the next intakes so the overall total is filled.
at least with them doing things in smaller groups over longer period, they can adjust the numbers to get full quota, whereas if they did the 1 intake and a load declined, then they'd have lost those places.
    (well, that's my logical reasoning)

Anyone else have a medical soon?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2 Hopeful2014

Hi there, new to this but see that it's full of info and hopefully someone can help.

Had the medical and unfortunately failed on grounds of colour deficiency.

Gutted, going to appeal as I have family who have the same deficiency yet are in the Armed Forces and they passed colour vision tests.

Does anyone have any advice on structuring an appeal? Or know anyone who has been successful in an appeal.

    Here's hoping thanks

I'm assuming there's no appeal information on the letter? The only thing I can think of is to contact PSNI recruitment or occupational health and well being. Might take a bit of ringing around to see if you can get numbers. Only other thing I can think of is to attend a familiarisation day and see if they could point you in the right direction. Did you take the medical recently? From previous experience in appeals they generally don't give you long after the test/result to appeal.

I'd definitely reapply as well to be on the safe side and hopefully if you get that far again maybe get an optometrist to test you before and include with your medical questionnaire

The letter says I have 30 days to lodge my appeal. Am trying to contact Occupational Health to get a steer.
I took the medical beginning of May, have already completed IST, Assessment Centre, PCA, Vetting forms in, Online learning completed was just the medical to do.
Going to an optometrist to get tested to double check the severity as was tested on colour vision during the medical.
Problem I have found is that in 2003 Home Office issued a policy on colour vision but only applies to England & Wales, Armed Forces offer a number of tests and although you can fail two passing the third would gain you entry but limit specialisations.
Tad frustrating as although this relates to firearms & driving all the organisations have different requirements.

As far as I remember wasn't there 3 possible outcomes of the medical, fit, fit for a revised role and unfit. Why can't they consider you for a revised role? Definitely see if they can test the severity of the colour blind test. I'm not sure what else to suggest except ant other trip to Carrick to get the contact details and other info. I'm sure there's got to be a template on Google for an appeal, I reckon it's the same sort of structure as any other appeal. That probably doesn't help, sorry

This may or may not, answer some of your questions - post re-testing.

Joggers/tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt! You've to strip to your briefs so make sure you're actually wearing some! Lol

Hi can I ask what your prescription is? I've booked a laser eye consultation but would rather not have to do it, both my sisters were in pain for 2 weeks after having theirs done

I know I'm not the person you asked but I'd just advise you, I'm -2.5 in one eye and -2.75 in the other and I was seriously seriously borderline for a fail. As far as I'm aware you need to get down to the third line on the eye chart and then be able to read a passage from a book, both of which were super difficult for me. I had to guess a few letters but fortune must've been smiling on me that day since I did pass lol my advice would be though if your prescription is equal to or worse than mine, get the laser eye. It's not worth getting this far to fail on something that's easily remedied. If I'm lucky enough to get a phone call I intend to get mine done before I start.

not sure of the exact prescription but think its in the region of 1.25/1.5, only ever wear them for reading or watching tv, theyre not that strong, only very slightly short sighted...

Without meaning to steer off topic - if you don't mind me asking, is there a group 4 on the online learning? Any group 5 etc?
