I'm waiting patiently on my medical results and it's killing me. Honestly, this is nothing compared to the waiting on IST, AC, Merit List. Probably cause it's the absolute final stage. Almost like waiting on 'the call'... kind of...

    I'm dreaming about it ffs!

I need something to take my mind of this.... I've tried porn. Any other suggestions?

At the end of June i was a bit drunk at a party and had 3 puffs on a joint!! I haven't touched the stuff in over a decade and I came to my senses and gave it back after 3 puffs.

Now i'm keeking myself, my medical is about a week away!!! I really can't believe one stupid drunken mistake may ruin my chances of joining the Police.

I'm such an idiot, because if i don't get in it's my own stupid fault.

who in their right mind would do such a thing! never catch me at that carry on.

    gud luck tho

The only thing I could hear was the heart pounding in my chest. It was kinda off-putting. So if you can leave yours outside, or turn down the volume, do so. :D

Also in the drugs bit where they ask you to list any painkillers etc you might have taken I had to put down Lemsip...at which all I could think of was Lemsnort!! Nerves!!

It wouldn't be the kind of place you would need to be a bit flatulant in, too. lol

Exactly what it says on the tin.. you MAY get Vetting and you MAY get a medical. You also MAY NOT.
Over a thousand in the merit list....probably you are out of the running to be honest but you never know. Someone RC istarting in November with merit score of over 1000. Depends on background but I'm thinking you are RC background as non RC in 800s have had Dear John letter.

Friend of mine, non RC, merit number in the 500s just got a Dear John on Saturday.

I was thinking the other day, if RCs on the last campaign are getting in with merit numbers of 800 and there are 220 places for them, that would mean in the top 440 of the merit list, there should be about 110 RCs. So 220 non RCs and 110 for RCs...gives 330 spaces filled so non RCs with a merit number up to around 330 should be grand. Also, some people will fail the medical or refuse the job but I don't know roughly how many that would be - and i suppose if all the places are allocated then if you are a non RC it's only useful to you if other non RCs fail the medical or turn down the job, and the same would go for RCs.

Also, if for example there are 800 RCs in the merit list and 700 drop out for whatever reason, leaving only 100, does that mean that the police can only recruit 100 non RCs to make it 50:50, meaning they only get about half the number of new officers that they need from this campaign? Crazy - still, if that happened I guess C15 would start soon - bring it on!

Hope my crazed ramblings make sense to some of you - i think i worked it out correctly. Does anyone know what percentage fail the medical/refuse the job?

It's true that if only 100 RC's are available to take up training positions, the PSNI can only take in 100 non-RC's. I don't think this had ever been an issue though. Let's face it, there are at least 7,000 people applying for this job each year. Getting 220 RC's is far from impossible!

I've also heard that if someone drops out of training, someone from the other background has to be held back to the next intake so that the 50:50 balence is maintained. Can anyone confirm this?

something just occurred to me, iv been training for a few years now with weights and cardio, have lost around 6 stone. however my weight loss plateaued around 4 months ago so i got myself maximuscle thermobol to kick start things again, this has worked and im within the correct weight range thankfully. is there anywhere on the medical forms (if i ever get them) where i'd need to declare this? they're completely legal and are just a natural supplement so theres no worries there, just unsure if id have to say id taken training supplements in the run up to the medical?

I don't recall there being anything in the medical forms themselves, but you'd probably need to declare it for the drugs test. They ask you to give them a list of any medication you have taken in the last number of months. Everything from paracetamol to Lemsnort®.

As far as Im aware theres nothing illegal about caffeine or orange peel extract. Its not a drug its a weight management supplement, so dont stress, you are not taking anything wrong.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 721 ✭✭✭goodcopbadcop

Please dont write down maximuscle thermobol on the medical forms, no one will know what it is, and it will probably just lead to them asking stupid questions about what it is and why you take it. its harmless and not illegal in any way shape or form, so just leave it out.

I had my medical recently and really worrying about it!!! Has anyone heard of anybody failing because of the spirometer test? I just didn't seem to be able to keep going for as long as the nurse wanted me to and the machine put me down as a poor result! Now I'm really worried that it's going to fail me even though I don't smoke and have never had any lung problems! Any advice greatly appreciated good and bad!!
    Thanks

I had to take it about 10 times cause it wouldnt give a proper reading because I stopped blowing too soon or something. I was worried about it but i still reached the level they wanted so it was all ok.

Hey, I am really worried about that as the first two times i didnt do it properly then after the third i had no more tries, does that mean it was ok or would the nurse have let me do more?

Hi Guys, Im wondering could any of you help me? I took anti-depressants for 3months a year ago, the doctor put on my form that it was an adjustment disorder. do any of you think that this will be a problem? He also put that all issues were now resolved and required no further treatment.

    Hi,

I had a medical for psni about 5 years ago, I had to declare that I had taken anti-depressants for about 3 months to help me relax and sleep at night when I was 18. The medical Dr was very good, asked me why I had the need for them, when I told him the reason ( my mum passed away and I was left to take care of my younger sister) he was very nice, even supportive about. So i think that so long as you have solid reasons and proof that you are not dependant on pills to keep you going with everyday life you should be fine. Incidentally i did fail that medical but it was due to my woeful eyesight! All sorted now!

    Hey Peggysu's

Well I think I did mine about 5 or 6 times and still couldn't get it and so the nurse just gave up and said she believed I was trying my best!!! GCBC did the nurse tell you you had reached the right level or can a poor result still mean a pass?

    Hi

I think they will tell you if you have any problems there and then, obviously drug test excluded.

In my medical I had a fair idea I passed everything except for the hearing. It threw up a referral for hearing in one ear. I knew it was coming as a previous employer had detected it in their medical assessment. Then, an ENT consultant deduced it was a nerve/neural issue and something that won't get worse - this might be what the PSNI will accept, ie so I won't use it as an excuse to retire on grounds of ill health.

My GP has now referred me to another ENT consultant in the interim, but I have also dug out the consultant's determination from before. I haven't had written confirmation yet but I know I better get my finger out and let them see my file.

But generally, they will let you know there and then. You really should know yourself from how they conduct themselves.

I asked the nurse at the time had I failed but all she said was that it was up to the doctor? Don't know what that meant!

Did you fail your medical or is a referral something different? I thought the medical requirements said that you would only fail the hearing test if it was in both ears?

Hey yes I had a referral for the bad one. They have their own hearing tolerances and the loss was enough to trigger the referral. I don't know exactly what it entails yet, but I assume they don't fail you straight away as you can pass if you show you can make adjustments. Fortunately hearing might come under DDA legislation. Its kind of like being told you eyesight is not up to scratch, but would be if you wear glasses.

My other half says its 'cos I am a man - selective hearing etc.....

I'm awaiting the letter from them...I had the med early last week....Previously I worked as an Air Traffic Controller and the hearing standards were extremely high, and I managed to scrape in there.....

In my case Myself and the nurse could see that I was blowing into it well above the level needed, the computer graph shows this, but I kept stopping too soon or something and it kept saying I had failed, we had to go through entering my details about 10 times to get it and even then i dont think it went through right, but unless it was due to a machine error, cause i could have blown hot water bottle up :D

My graph showed a big peak at the start which then fell quite quickly cos I ran out of breath. Did you fail yours GCBC? Is it the peak at the start they are looking at or how long you can keep going for?
