I successfully appealed my medical failure. Got word at the start of January. If you get a report from a qualified practicioner you should be fine. To be sure, I'd get something from a specialist in the field rather than just your GP.

From the day I sent in my information, it took about 6 weeks to receive word that i'd been successful.

    Hey same here.
I am under the limits for hearing in one ear.
I am awaiting an MRI scan and a report from an ENT consultant, however I have a report from one of those hearing aid shops, too.
Its gathering the information that take soooo long.
My merit is around 100. I have to get in otherwise I will be annoyed....

Really sorry to hear that, i hope everything goes your way, thats a stonking good merit score ( wish it was mine! )
The odds are good tho as I said before, most boardies who appeal medicals do get the green light.
Best of luck and fingers crossed.

    hey pablissimo

yeh i agree with u about gathering the information, just hard to make sure you have everything you need to make your appeal successful. i hope everything goes well for u cos with that merit number you would have probably been in an all. what is your background if u dont mind me asking? good luck with your appeal and keep us updated on how it goes.

    alright folks

haven't been on in a while, trying to stay away and forget about the waiting to avoid frustration!

just wondering if anyone has been called to a medical since the last medicals (which I think were at the end of 2008??), or do you think if you haven't been called to a medical by this stage that this campaign is pretty much over for you????

    im non-rc, merit was 300 - 350...

if anyone can shed any light that would be great, cheers!!!!

I feel left out... i want a PM from PYG :D

On a serious note... I had a letter from a consultant for my appeal and passed it. I would say a GP letter would be enough though because if you think about it, failing you after a GP says you are medically fit would be tantamount to suggesting the GP is either lying or incompetent - neither of which would be particularly professional to imply.

Definately get as much info as possible tho just to be sure - good luck to all appealers. :)

am in the same position as yourself, non rc merit betwn 355 and 365 and still awaiting a wee med date, am figuring that it's still early days yet as the last campaign were still putting people onto courses in november.... ever hopeful or ever naive, who knows!:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 91 ✭✭el_nino_9

i got a medical date in the last campaign and i am non rc and my merit number was 420-430. there is still hope for non rc's with merit numbers like yours. they are maybe just putting people through as and when required for medicals.

I got a medical in the last campaign and my merit number was in the 600's! I'm a non-RC! They must've thought I was RC initially.

I was appealing regarding a shoulder injury I sustained from a rugby match about 6 years ago that never recovered itself. 6 years of pain before a consultant was able to find out what the heck was wrong.

Anyhow, had several injections, MRI and other scans and the OHW doctor said due to the nature of the job i was applying for and the nature of the injury they couldn't pass me!

Got the consultant to right a letter stating that I was fully recovered. I also wrote a covering letter outlining the activities that I enjoy (including downhill MTB, rugby and swimming) and a couple weeks later got the pass letter.

The unfortunate thing is - they didn't bother telling external appointments I had passed it fully! But that got sorted too in the end.

Like MGH mentioned; with the right info and some effort to collate it all, i'd say its quite easy to get a successful appeal. With as many applicants as they have they probably just look for reasons to prune us back.

I remember there was someone on here who had extra info on when the results letters go out, does anyone know who this was or know whether there are any more letters going out soon. Confident Ive passed it but with talk of the next calls going out within the next forthnight id like to have a pass letter before then, even though I dont believe I'll get in in april its just the feeling that id have a chance. Had my medical the week before xmas if that helps.

Haven't been on here in a while and coincidentially just popped on tonight! You should have received your letters... maybe an admin error. It's worth ringing up about them. You want to ring 90922930 and ask for ext 69350.

    Good luck

    Ok everyone,
I really want to apply to join the PSNI however one main thing is concerning me. My eyesight.

I have astigmatism in my right eye, and I know my eyesight is -13 unaided? (Im short sighted) Although with my glasses on/with contacts its basically perfect.

I read on the site about the 6/6 etc but Im a bit unsure about it. Forgive my stupidity.

What do you think? Is my eye sight so bad there is no point in applying?

i dont know its confusing. the best thing to do would be go to your optitions for a check up so that you can find out if theyre good enough. i have short sightedness and i can barely read what i type on the screen roughly 1m/arms length from the screen.

you get to wear your glasses for part of the eye exam as far as i remember you need to have 20/20 vision with your glasses. apart from that i dont know much. although i would say if you dont apply then you'll never find out for yourself. worry about that stage when you get there!!! if you get that far and and fail you can look into appealing or surgerryor whatever.

there is never no point in applying!!!

My eyesight caused me to fail my medical the last time i applied and at that time it was -3.5 in each eye with a slight astigmatism in my left eye. I couldn't really see the numbers on buses when they had pulled up to the stop, so I can see why they failed me! I have since had corrective laser surgery (more or less specifically to get into the police!) an my vision is now 0, which is 20/20 sight.

I was told by a serving plod that you still have to be able to see without your glasses on even if you do need them, for instance if they get knocked off in a fight or you lose a contact lense etc you wouldn't be much use to your neighbour then.

Speak to your optician, they will def know if your eyesight makes the grade or not.

    Hope that helps?

    PSM:cool:
