Lol it def is the best thing ever invented! Noticed were around the same age... wonder what the average age is in the psni... see in the merit points do you think age has anything to contribute to it?

No worries. Yep I got in. got the call yesterday. Due to start in May. Good luck with your application. well worth the wait.

Regarding horror stories. One guy i know had to go to London for specialist surgery after a botch job and another has to put drops in every day for life due to dry eyes...not sure if this is normal though!!

Question: How does the PSNI recruitment policy view people who have suffered from/ are sufferring from mental health problems?

If a person has, for example, suffered from depression in the past & has taken medication for this particular problem does this mean that they can be ruled out of the recruitment process?

Also, does anybody know what the view is on people who suffer from mental health problems currently & have applied to the PSNI?

Any information which can help shed light on any of the above queries is much welcome.

I believe that if you currently suffer from mental health issues & take medication for such a condition then you are effectively out of the running for the PSNI. Correct me if i'm wrong!!!

heres my experience with this if it helps: i had an epidose of mild depression about 4 years ago, and took anti-depressants for 3-4 months. i passed my medical as the doctor seemed satisfied that it was brought on by an incident and short-term, and not sympomatic of my personaility in general, which i think is what they don't like. i think the reason is because that in the job you are obviously going to encounter upsetting situations and also you will have access to firearms.

you will be fine believe me, i hate the thoughts of stuff like that! i went for the full lot, lasek, with wavefront and epilase, no blades involved at all, jesus i wouldn't let anyone near me peepers with a blade! optimax are good, they even have an interest free payment plan... i got mine at a reduced rate as i am an nhs employee, go to their website, there is a forum where former patients go on and answer queries. unless you are very unlucky and things don't work out for you (which can happen in any operation!) you will never look back, well you won't look back with crappy blurry vision!

I can honestly say it has changed my life, getting into the psni would just mke it all the greater!

I was due to get my eyes lasered on Monday, booked the day off work , and then just my luck their blinkin' machine neeeded a part......... SERIOUSLY I have re booked for later this month, the treatment days are limited as the Doc. has to travel over from across the water , like PEGGYSUE'S MAMMA i'm getting the full lot, lasek, with wavefront and epilase, with an interest free payment plan ( the only way I can afford to get it done ) Its a good investment even if I don't get into the PSNI I'm bound to save money in the long run as I won't be paying out for contacts, eye examines, frames, and glasses. The freedom of not having to bother with the aforementioned is very eyepeeling , Er.... I mean appealing.

that happened to me too! Had my appt booked for 1st thing on the monday, got there, bundle of nerves to be told, they were not happy with machine. Back the next day,in and out in an hour or so... slept like a ba afterwards. Woke up and i could see the neighbour's sky tv guide menu on their tv in the house over the road from mine. amazing! mostly frustrated at not being able to do anything for a few days was the worst bit!:p

In all seriousness how much spondulicks are we talking about? I'm long sighted and wear glasses\lenses but would seriously consider this even though my optician says I'd walk the eye test!!
Its just something I've started giving serious consideration to.

grip those knickers! mine worked out at £2400, and that was with 25% discount at 2007 prices. They offer discount (optimax that is) for loads of employees. I would say full price now would be over £3400... but that's for myopia and astigmatism. This crap about starting prices of £650 per eye is just baiting interest. I'd say mainland maybe slightly cheaper than here or dublin. I have friends who have gone to london and glasgow and it has been cheaper. don't fancy flying afterwards though, that would not be nice!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 405 ✭✭tickle_monster

my quote is £2,647 but ive got a 25% for being a student so it would be £3,570 but thats lasik intralase wavefront!

meant to ask the girl if it doesnt work and you contacts when you take them out is there a chance you could take your cornea with it? or does it definetly heal? i dont know why i ask ill go lie down and take a panic attack wonder if they supply gas and air :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 298 ✭✭PEGGYSUE'S MAMA

could you rephrase that bit about the contacts and the corneas?

lol some people on the internet say that the corneal flap never heals well their experience so my mind went into overdrive and thought if i put contacts in and go to take them out would it take your cornea  im going to ring and book it so ill ask the girl and ill let you know, actaully i may google it! the woman did say 3 months and it would heal, im just panicing lol :D

ahhh getcha now. takes 3-6 mths for healthy cornea to heal, thats why no rubby of the eyes is allowed for 6 mths. remember it is ike everything in life, differs for every person, i got so lucky (for once!), touch wood nae bother to date. had been shortsighted and bespectacled since the age of 13, what a way to enter the teens eh!

if you are really that anxious about the surgery and outcome, it may not be for you, i spoke with 2 consultants before i made my decision and they both said that they are reluctant to treat people who expect 110% from the procedure as they cannot guarantee perfection!

ill stock up on valium i just dont know where to get it lol
