    Morning all

You're right that I did the PCA for C14. I remember doing medical in early October 2008 and failing for BMI. I didn't have to appeal as the fail letter told me I would be automatically allowed to do the PCA. I did the PCA on 12th November (I think). I recon I probably got 1 to 2 weeks notice. I can hoke out the letter and tell you for sure if it helps:)

Thanks for the info. what sort of training programme did you do for the PCA ? As I mentioned earlier I enjoy walking and swimming but can't help feeling that is not really all that much use for the PCA .
Did everyone who did the PCA with you pass ?

I am in the same boat and have my PCA soon. PSNI advised me to sprint for 60 seconds walk for 60 seconds and repeat 6 times then move to a rowing machine and do the same, 60 seconds relaxed pace then 60 flat out 6 times. I think he said that if I could do that without needing a paramedic then I was ready. (I am not ready!)

    Looks easy doesn't it?

If you're struggling with that, then increase your recovery time between each sprint from 60 seconds to 90 seconds (or 120 if you need to). When you can achieve the plan I laid out with a 90 (or 120) second recovery period between each sprint, get your recovery time down to 60 seconds in 10 second increments.

    Best of luck!

vet forms completed and posted back 3weeks ago
med last week, dr took my blood pressure, said it was high,(sailed through everthing else) dr said its happens all the time due to "the fact that its your medical", give me a letter for my own dr to complete, asking for my blood pressure history over the last 6 months.

my problem? been to my dr twice in the last year, thankfully he took my blood pressure (once in july of this year), for life insurance purposes, reading 134/84, the 2nd 127/65(nov last year).

my own drs says he has no problem,(i never even thought there was a problem!) posted it back to the med staff. has anybody ever experienced this before. heads wrecked thinking i've hit a hiccup, tested my blood pressure twice since then, readings 125/83 and 128/85,ahhhhhh?!

Those are perfectly acceptable. I don't think you've got anything to worry about on that front TBH.

Hi all, was pointed in the direction of this board by a friend and its just as comprehensive as he described!

Ive a couple of questions which people here may or may not be able to help with...

    1. Do the psni have a policy on Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction? Currently the Armed Forces will not admit anyone who has had the surgery.

    2. On reading these threads it appears I would need to have a few hairs of 3cm or more in length for the smt. I have my medical in a couple of weeks and without going into detail I dont think I have a hair even approaching 2cm on my body! Would I need to phone and let them know about this?

    Muchos Gracias

Not that I'm aware of. They will ask you for a letter from your specialist to say that you're fit for the robust duties of a police officer. Get that and you should be fine.

It would be great idea to call in advance and let them know. Follow any instructions or advice they give you.

Thanks for that, I have a filing cabinet full of consultants letters and MRI scans so there should be no problem there.

And a friend pointed out there is an area where I may have the required length of hair, but it brings tears to my eyes even thinking about it!

    cheers

If they can't cut from your head then they'll look at cutting from armpits. If not from there then they look to your chest/back and if nothing there then it's the nether regions. It's cut, not plucked so hopefully there'll be no tears!!! The staff are nice and you'll feel at ease the whole time you're there. Good luck :)

In the same boat just being patient at the moment. Its always on my mind though, this would mean the world to me but the competition is so fierce it may take a while :(

I am in the same boat mate, im just taking it as going to get a dear john letter. Do you have to have the medical done to get a merit number do you know...or is the merit number just conducted on your ac centre ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 42 adam2695

no mate, you get your merit number based on how you did through IST and A/C. Its mad like, cause the same thing happened to me last year and I got a merit score in the 600's. Its just very weird that people would have been getting vetting forms and medical dates, have done the A/C after me. I thought that I did well, and so did a friend of mine and we have heard nothing as of yet!!!

when do you think the merit list will be available? What is a good merit score for a non r/c?

Honestly mate, you are talking about sub 300 to have a decent chance of getting the call. To be honest, I came in the 600 last year, and I was well off it, but with the bulk of applicants being non r/c, you, me and all non r/c are going to find it difficult once again.

The process is very fair, up until it comes to the 50/50 split. A person that has the potential of being a very good police officer, could lose out due to their community background.

So in the 300s then is what non r/c should be aiming for? Thanks mate for the info. When are you going to ring for your merit number mate?

    Hi lads,

I got a medical coming up north of belfast at 9:15 am. i'll be coming from Dublin. I just want to know what the traffic situation will be like coming into Belfast and going on northwards? I was thinking about leaving at 6.30 or would this be cutting it tight?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I would leave bout 6 you would need to be hitting Lisburn by about 7:30 to allow for traffic!!! You are better being early rather than missin it

I'd give yourself extra time, the traffic can be a bitch and it your early it looks better than being late. I was 35 minutes early for mine (too keen lol) and they just started my medical right away so it's not as if you'll be waiting ages

Definitely leave early - knowing where the medicals are held (and obviously I'll not state that here) I have regularly travelled said road and the M1 first thing in the morning and you risk serious traffic problems on both if you're approaching either during busy period in the morning!

Have you considered booking into a hotel nearby the night before? There's a relatively cheap one just down the road.... Dunno about you, but rushing for an appointment through bad traffic first thing in the morning does nothing for MY blood pressure ;) Good luck!

    Cheers for all the replies!
ya i had a hotel booked originally alright but have to scrap that idea due to circumstances. Right looks like it'll be an early start for me anyway!
