In fairnes to Paddy (the organiser) he has been busting his balls to get this together. While I agree there are no huge names, but really, so what? It will hopefully be a good weekend.

There hasn't been a dublin convention in 2 years, there was plenty of time for others to step in and take charge, no one did.

Not busting them hard enough it would seem. ;)
I appreciate what he's doing in one sense of the word but on the other hand lets not make out he's doin this out of the goodness of his heart either, he stands to make profit out of it.
As for your point about no big names, big names attract a more diverse and larger crowd. Besides which, bigger names are generally bigger for a reason, talent. The portfolios of the artists attending that I've viewed are not exactly jaw dropping.
With a bit more effort maybe 2009s convention will at least be as good as 2004. As I said earlier in the thread, my tip for Paddy would be to organise 2009 for a week before / after London. There's 130 (ish) top artists at that convention, even if 10 decided to pop over to Dublin it would be awesome. Just because we are a smaller country I dont see why we should accept sub-par conventions, like we should be greatful just to have one.
I know I'm b1thcin on about this but its only because i was so pumped when I heard it announced and then dejected when the line-up was annonced. I would love a half-decent proper international convention to support.

Yeah London had some selection of artists this year. It prides itself on getting 1000 entries from artists and gives out less than 200 places. Your idea of a convention a week before or after London could be a good one especially if free booths were given to a select few. A lot of the tattooists who have travelled to London hang around the UK for a couple of days work afterwards so the trip to Dublin might not be an inconvenience for them either.

London had an awesome array of artists this year. The quality of work being churned out and the level of tattooing on display through various artists portfolios was amazing. Your idea about free booths for a select few artists is a good one. That could provide that draw that I've said I feel is absent from this years con.
It would also be great to see Dublin trying to be more of an "event", what I mean by that is, it wouldnt cost much more to rope in local burlesque dancers, a variety of DJ's (a DMC contestants for example) , get 3rd/4th students from NCAD to help organise the look of the place etc. Just an idea. Maybe next year.

To have a convention a week before or after another convention is disrespectful to the orgainizers and the tattooist.... in the past some of the biggist names in tattooing have been in Dublin and throught the year they come and go in different shops ..... can you name 10 top names that you'd like to see?? and if they were here could you afford to get tattooed off them ???

So the fact that the Rome convention is on shortly after the London one is disrespectful too?:confused: Due to Irelands size etc it makes sense to put Dublins convention on shortly before or after London in order to attract the best names possible. I have no idea how you think this is a show of disrespect, what, are the top artists going to come to the Dublin con and not bother with London? I think not. You're talkin out your hole.
You're right that a couple of the big names in tattooing have "performed" at Dublins con, so whats changed?
Do you really want to know 10 artists I'd like to see represent their style at a convention??
And yes, I can afford to get tattooed by them. Whats your point?
Another thing, as for paddy wanting to please as many people as possible, ok so no one wants to put on a cr@p convention, but I've said it before, he's not doing this out of the kindness of his heart.

Coming into a thread with a foul attitude like that doesn't add a thing, voodoobilly.

of course he wants to make money, who doesnt? he's a businessman.... the fact of the matter is that this show couldnt get a venue suitable until the last min so most of the BIG names had other plans already... next year Im sure it will be started earlier to get some of the bigger names..... do you understand that people have families and shops to take care of and they cant always just jump from place to place.... what differance does it make if you were at London then you got your tattoos off who you wanted.... instead of bitching why dont you offer to help Paddy for next time??? I'll pass on your words to Paddy I know he likes to hear feedback from people so he can try make it better for next time....you know you can e-mail him and tell him this all yourself.... but why not go to the show 1 day at least and see whats happening before you condem it before it happens....

I don't see why so many people are being negative even before it starts. I'm going in Friday, gonna buy my weekend ticket and have a blast. I'm not getting any work done cos I've no want for new ink yet. Gonna go socialise and have the craic, make some new friends maybe and get hammered in the process.

Everyone quit your bitchin, take a leaf out of Voodoobilly's book and go check it out before people berate it. If after the weekend you feel hard done by email Paddy or go chat to him. We all know where the studio is. I'm gonna be going in giving feedback regardless after the weekend is over.

Anyway it turns out I'm a big huge dumbass and can't go because this weekend is my graduation. I only realised it this afternoon passing the ad in Tower Records' window. For some reason I thought it was the weekend AFTER! *facepalm*

I hope it goes well for them and I hope that next year is better becasuse as it stands this years line-up is p1ss poor and isnt a patch on previous conventions which Paddy organised and I very much enjoyed. Well the Leopardstown ones were great, the last one in the SFX was a shambles and part of the reason why some artists arent returning.
Tattoo artists have families and shops??? Wow........ So all the decent artists were busy that day is what you're saying. Thats a weak excuse.
Dont know what your point is exactly about me getting tattooed in London, I want more than 1 y'know. Besides which, if there was an artist who's work I liked getting tattooed by them without having to go through an airport would be nice dont you think?
Pass the comments on to Paddy, with a bit of luck he'll take them on board and make a better convention in the future. When I went in to ask him about the convention (3 or 4 times) I found him dismissive and cagey so maybe you'll have better luck. I realise I can email him and tell him all this but what would the point be exactly? Hi Paddy, The line-up sucks, myself and my tattoo loving mates wont be attending. Better luck next time. :p
I know what you're saying about going before condemning and all but the way I see it is, the line-up isn't worth the money unfortunately.

Voodoobilly you need to read the posts you are replying to, especially when your putting so much into your replies. I agree with the work involved in getting a convention together but some of your remarks are out of order and unwarranted. I am going to the Convention and expect to have a great time as I pointed out before your tirade!
