At least two other prominent national furniture chain stores in Galway are in serious trouble. Naming them is not helpful to anyone .

If ordering a big ticket item make sure you do so on your credit card so that if the chain does a runner you can get the credit card charged back at no cost to you .

If you pay cash or cheque or laser upfront and they then close then its tough titty , on you .

Horrible way to lose a hard earned €1500 so let your plastic take the strain  for you .

I disagree that naming them is not helpful. The more awareness there is of this type of thing, the more aware consumers will be. This can only be good as the right of the consumer should always be thought of before the right of a business, on dodgy foundations, to stay in business.

The advice on using Credit Card is very good.

Exactly, if your sure of your information and not heresay why not name them as I'd hate to pay a large amount over to a company and then find out some one here knew that they were in triouble.

Where as if its just what your cousin's friends brother said and there not too sure, I'd just leave it and not name

But it would be advisabe to have some serious back up for any allegations.....

You woudln't want to sink a business that was not going under.
Neither would you want to risk a defamation claim.

    Every industry is suffering.

    Precisely.

The problem with furniture in particular is that the lead time for an order is often 3 months because it often comes in from southern europe or eastern europe or even China.

In that time things can change . By ordering the items using a credit card you will be fine whatever happens .

On the other hand if the item is in stock you normally get a discount for cash if you haggle and are prepared to take it away with you .

Its not helpful to name anybody, only to inform the consumer how to protect themselves against the consequences of a possible failure .

    Use The Credit Card .

You do not need to have any insurance , you just ring the banks and say the goods were never delivered and the bank will charge your card back for the full amount !!!!!

Furniture stores are always coming and going ( especially going) and this very topic of how to protect yourself was covered in this very forum a year back I see
