Looking to upgrade 8600gt card to one in the 8800 range.
The 8600gt runs ok, but what would be the best choice of 8800
card be. Any advice much appreciated.

    (i)Whats your budget?

(ii) What size is your monitor?

    If your monitor is a 17" to a 20" a 8800Gt @ €150 is well worth it.

I would say if the 8600gt is fine for the moment, sit on your money. Unless there is a game that does not run well for you.

New cards are out and at the very least should drop the prices of the 8 series and ATI are releasing cards soon that may be worth a look as well.

Budget of about €150 mark and have 22" Monitor.
I see an 8800GS on Kompleet for only €92. Seem like a good
    card and price.
Could ther be power problems with the machine I am going to put
the 8800 card into. It is a Dell Inspiron 530?

the fan of 8800gs need a standard 6pin power supply(they give you the 6pin to 2x 4 pin molex connector if you dont have one from your PSU).i was impressed by the power supply it need since my last card was 6200LE :D

You will prob get away with it.

My little brothers rig is running off an old FSP 350W psu, core 2 duo 2.66ghz + 8800GT.

Card should come with an adapter to convert molex to 6 pin power connector so an older psu should not be an issue.

Personally I would go for the 8800GT as it has a little more kick to it than a 8800Gs which will help with the higher resolutions.

    Thanks guys,

Am no expert when it comes to messing around inside pc's

Just opened the pc to have a look. There does not appear to be
any molex cables at all coming from the psu.

This appears to be the psu installed.

Me thinks I will need different cables to connect.
Question is what kind if any?

In the 2nd diagram, the cable marked peripheral, is commonly refered to as a molex connector:

If you don't have any spare molex connections on the psu you would be shafted.

300W is a wee bit low, however you might just get away with it. Ideally you would a 400w psu.

If you have a floppy drive, disconnect it and use its molex connector.

Otherwise get a splitter and use some other molex, not sure if that would cause any serious power supply issues.

Just had another look inside the box and turns out there are no molex connections coming from the PSU at all, All are SATA cables.

    What now.

Would just putting another 8600gt in sli formation be my only option

You can get sata to molex converters.

    Here's one on ebay.

Wow, Dell gone all sata. Hardcore.

Also for SLI you need a motherboard with a Nvidia that supports that feature.

You def will not find this feature on a cheap dell!

The thing about standard PCs from any oem is that they really are only geared towards basic use.

So low power PSU, limited motherbaords, limited expansion slots etc as 99.99% of people who buy regular pcs won't game on one, hence do not use an extra features so OEMs make the PC as cheap as possible to keep the price low as possible so it will sell.

I think you are begining to see why people buy gaming machines or skip OEMs altogether and build their own.

One option you may have would be to replace the PSU in the pc to a much better spec one, but this will depend on the motherboard.

Sometimes Dell use a different power connectors on their motherboards/PSUs, so a standard off the shelf quality PSU may not be compatible.
