Hopefully somebody may have some advice on the following.
The brother is changing his 05 petrol bora for a new jetta and was asking my opinion on whether to go for petrol or diesel. He is only interested in doing a trade in a garage and is only interested in getting a jetta (doesn't want hassle of trying to sell privately). His annual mileage is pretty low approx 15k a year but he is planning on keeping this new car for a much longer period of time so what would ye think would be the most cost effective over 7 or 8 year period of ownership petrol or diesel.
    Thanks in advance

diesel, especially since the TDI models are dropping in July. presuming the price of diesel at the pumps doesn't skyrocket compared to petrol

Diesel. Much more sellable, only a marginal premium from July and lower road tax every year too. Though the cheapest diesel Jetta(1.9 TDI) sounds like a tractor. I'd advise the newer and much more modern 2.0 TDI.

That 1.9TDI must be around for years! I did a timing belt on a 1996 ford galaxy 1.9TDI and did a 07 passat timing belt. same engine. just a few small changes.
    OP get a 2.0 tdi;)

How much is a 2.0 TDI after July E92? (VW are saying €33k for after July, which has to be wrong - €100 less than the equivelant Passat?)

I'd disagree with the suggestions to get a 2.0 if it pushes the price up too far (which i'm sure it will) there are enough 1.9 Golfs and Passats on the roads to prove that people find it refined enough for their expectations.

From here: "Prices not currently available"(same goes for the Beetle too)

€33k is the pre July price at any rate colm_mcm.

Regardless, anyone spending Passat money on a Jetta is a fool.

Colm, your link doesn't mention July prices anywhere, unlike the one for the Golf, where it says it at the top * Prices effective July 1st 2008.

From my own guessestimate thread in the very first link in my sig, the 2.0 TDI should be closer to €30k, and your Jetta prices are the pre July ones.

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,456 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

if you click on any of the models, (like this one)
    http://www.volkswagen.ie/Configurator/index.cfm?fuseaction=vw.Standard&variantID=7645

    July 2008 prices come up.

Anyhow, 30k is too much for a Jetta diesel if you can get a Passat 1.9 for €28700. how is that cost effective?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,147 ✭✭✭E92

My bad:o! Though it is nevertheless the pre July price. Don't believe everything you see on official websites:D!

Either way €30k is a lot for a Jetta, and €33.5k is obscene. I always thought it was too closely priced to the Passat to represent a serious alternative to it. €33,695 buys you the cheapest 2.0 TDI Passat, though €1,500 more buys you the new B8 A4 2.0 TDI.

If a Jetta is that expensive why not give a look at a Skoda 20 TDi vRS ??
Some car for the money

Yes but the vRS only makes sense with a petrol engine. Otherwise you're paying for a hot hatch but getting anything but a hot hatch.

170bhp. Makes it a reasonably quick cruiser in my book.

170hp from a desial. Not bad at all!

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,456 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

when you see the likes of Corolla D-4D Luna or Focus TDCI coming in under the mid 20's, the Jetta looks very pricey. The OP's friend would be well advised to consider the alternatives.

Where? The petrols are 170hp, not the diesels

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,456 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

the diesel is 170bhp too isn't it? I'm certain it is.

  • Moderators Posts: 12,375 ✭✭✭✭Black_Knight

Im not sure, I was just looking at the list of Jettas you linked. All the 170Bhp cars are petrols. I know there is a 170Bhp TDI VW but I dont see it there.

Petrols use the 200bhp TFSi engine from the Golf GTI. Diesels use the VW 2.0TDi 170bhp engine.

Having driven the Octavia VRS Diesel, it definately qualifies as a hot hatch in my book. Now available with the DSG box as well.

Back on topic - go for the diesel. I know he's planning on keeping it for a good while, but the Diesel Jetta's will be hard enough to shift when he's finished with it - Petrol models will be more or less sale proof.

The pricing on the VW website for the Jetta is the same as it was before they released new pricing, so I don't think they've decided what to do with that yet.

Get a remap and you have an instant 205 bhp and Massive TORQUE ..!! :D

I think the 170bhp version of the 2.0 TDi in Jetta is a special order in Ireland afaik. It is the old PD unit found in the Octavia vRS, Passat and old model A4.

Anyway it is daft imo to spend anything around €30k or more on a Jetta. Jetta, Bora, Vento all have poor second hand resale values. If he wants a VW saloon then go for a Passat, I'd rather take a year old Passat than a new Jetta to be honest.
