    Hi all,
I am looking for some inspiration here. I am nearly fininshed a degree in Business Information Systems. However, I have no idea where i want my career to go. If someone asked me what do you like: Database, Networks, Security, Development? I would probably say security. I do know however that i dislike developing. Any project i had to develop usually depressed me. Mostly the fact of sitting at a desk everyday for hours just trying to code drives me insane. So i also rule out Database dev/admin as it would be somewhat of a similar approach.
That leaves Networking/Security. I am actually kind of interested in security but i have little experience in it. Networking the same. I was considering getting a CCNA but the thing about networking is i dont want to start in such a new environment as my course had little networking in it.

IT security? Getting bigger and bigger apparently. But what way or how do you begin this career. Start off as a network admin??

Anywhoo sorry about the moan but i just feel lost as to where to go, so if your in an inspiring mood today, Help me!

One of the main providers that are recognised around the place in the security arena is (ISC)2

Their Associate cert would be a good starting point. Since a lot of network professionals move into the security stuff, you might want to supplement it with some networking experience. Main thing it would at least give you the edge when trying to get into a junior position in this field

Or you could always do a Masters in the subject. The only open masters in the area is DCU's MSc in Security and Forensic Computing and it's available full time and part time.

PM me for more info if you want - j

qualifications are all well and good, but its experience working in the field that can tell you what you would like to do.
Get a job that can give you a broad experience, and you can see what area you would like to specialise in.
college isn't the best for real i.t experience.
Also, most companies look at your experience when they are looking for people, but you have an upper hand if you have the experience with the qualification as a bonus.

IT Security is a very wide field.

What about doing the CCNA and CompTIA Security+ as a start. In order to be able to secure something you have to know how it works. Then maybe get an MCSA or MCSE. After (or during) the above you need experience. Then when you know your stuff you can start learning more advanced security.
