With all the current fuss about the No vote to Lisbon let us not loss sight of the state of the Nation at present.

It is only 18 - 24 months since we were enjoying a very much extended period of prosperity never before seen in the history of the State.

What people do not now realise is that the government purse is now totally empty. Short of social welfare payments more or less all government funding has been stopped. Payments promised under National Development Plan have been suspended, even if these are in the Towards 2016 agreement.

And what have we as a nation gained from this period of prosperity. Where are the roads, schools, social housing & hospitals? We have let greed guide us over the last two decades. The period of boom was never going to be sustained, fair enough as it was built on a false economy. My really problem is that this was a really opportunity to set the country in the right direction for the next 50 years or so. This opportunity has been totally wasted.

    Rant over - thanks!
