DOT4 is brake fluid Power steering fluid is called ... power steering fluid! Don't know exactly how much it costs, but it's not too dear. Check your handbook to make sure you're getting the right stuff before doing anything.

^ DOT4 is a standard, not the actual name. Look at the reservoir cap, it will tell you what you need.

    Not your ornery onager

There's several different types, often specific to a manufacturer. Should be about €8-€15 a litre. I had a leaky power steering rack for a while (had to get a new one - that's what a get for hitting a kerb too fast :( ) and found out the stuff from the dealer's (Ford in my case) was cheaper than the Castrol equivalent. In Halford's they have a chart thing on the shelves to tell you what type you need, and I'm sure any motor factors would know what's what.

It may be sold as "ATF" (Automatic Transmission Fuid), as the same stuff is used in auto gearboxes.

Some newer cars have electric power steering which don't need fluid.
