Clever or what? When he gets forced from office by the EU parliament with the hlep of the head of the Commission he'll return the conquering hero so to speak. A man "they" done down. Just in time to have a tilt at the Presidency?

    Don't say it can't happen.

    Mike.

I'm a big fan of McCreevy but in this referendum he was an ass and he summed up the attitude of the political establishment.

    thats a good one Mike.

have you a source for this particular rumour ?

i'd say there is not a chance of Charlie getting the presidency.

if theres any possibility that McCreevey is forced off the office perhaps ireland will be the person to lose their commissioner - as per Nice .

    problem solved :)

Domestic popularity or the Libertas-style hypothesis someone else put forward make more sense than doing it for a shot at EU President...

The referendum is one thing, but apparently he missed some major economics meeting and gave a reasonable excuse, then turned up on TV at Cheltenham !!!!!:D:eek:

He's not exactly sending out an image that would inspire much confidence in his abilities or commitment to the job.

No change there for an Irish politician.

Anyway, what's the problem. The Commissioners are not at the Commission to represent their countries. Apparently.

Do you know how hard it is to remove a commissioner from office?
His few gaffs during the Lisbon Referendum campaign are nothing really to write home about - a million miles away for valid reasons to get him fired.

And anyway, it's the form that when you become a EU Commissioner your political career is over.

Quite so - President of Ireland is the perfect role for him.

That's not up for grabs until 2011, isn't it? Charlie won't wait that long.

And isn't there going to be a new Commission next year anyway, so he'll be unemployed then - two year to kick around then.
