Must I get new battery?

My laptop battery won't hold a charge any longer. I had assumed that wouldn't be a problem once the laptop was plugged in but in fact the laptop keeps switching itself of now. Must I buy a new battery? They seem to be a very expensive outlay for an elderly laptop.

well if your battery is anywhere near or older than 2 years its likely dead. laptop batteries naturally age with every discharge.
