Apparently it's through the AA this is obtained. Is there anywhere in Dublin I can apply for this in person as going away Sunday week.
Can't think of any AA offices.

AA shop/office is in Drury St, at the rear of the George's St Arcade.

    Ah, excellent. Thanks.

Wonder if they can give it to me on the same day if I give them a passport photo.

    Sorry, as an aside.....
In what situations is this licence required?
I thought the "pink Irish" license was good anywhere.

Photo, full licence and a few quid, thats all.

kippy - most countries outside the EU require you have one, its an authorised translation of your licence to a set of UN standards. Most English speaking countries will just take the Irish one, as will all EU countries, no need for the International Driving Permit (not a licence...)

If you are driving in a country that doesn't use an EU language then you need it, all it does is translate your licence into different languages.

If you give them money and some passport photos, yes

Is there a real need for it though?!

If you want to be not-arrested at a checkpoint in some far-flung country for not having a driving licence (despite having your pink Irish one with you...), yes. Yes there is.
