Eh, did I miss something there???

If any undemocratic government was forced to hand power over to its people, then I'd have absolutely no objections. So if the EU forced referendums on countries under its remit, then surely the ordinary people would have the final say on treaties such as Lisbon - what would I be complaining about?

    Regards!

Its not about democratic vs non-democratic. We had the vote because of Crotty. There was nothing to stop other EU citizens from taking similar cases to their courts to push for a referendum if they so wished. In fact thats exactly whats happening in the UK at the moment, that Euroskeptic billionaire guy (can't remember his name) is taking a case to try and force a referendum. Browne has been instructed not to ratify the Treaty until the court has ruled.

The Lisbon Treaty has not been a secret, nor has each member states ratification processes. If citizens of those countries (and it only takes 1 citizen) were sufficiently unhappy with the Treaty and/or their nations ratification process then they have the mechanisms available through their legal systems to challenge their Government on it. The EU itself has absolutely no legal right to do this, nor should they. It should be down to the people of the state and the people alone to enforce these kinds of changes. The issue of ratification is a sovereign issue.

Ultimately if noone did that in the other 25 nations then we have to assume (as no other conclusion can be reached) that they were happy to let their Governments make the decision on the Treaty. There is nothing at all anti-democratic about that.

Can you not see what is happening in the USA
Also, do you honestly think that most EU meetings take place behind closed doors, because they are looking after the best interests of the people...

    VOTE YES 2 LISBON 2

Odd how the no camp always tries to stir fears of Neo-conservatism and anti-americanism when they try to get people to vote no, ignoring John Bolton's open hostility to the Lisbon Treaty when he visited Dublin and the background of the people behind Libertas.

And wasn't there a specific part of the Lisbon Treaty that was going to put an end to meetings of the Council of Ministers taking place behind closed doors
