That's Big Mike for you. Says sweet FA for about a year, and then comes out with that dross.

    Dross?

i thought it was comical, nice to see an owner with a bit of a personality

Well considering he says he is looking fro investment, and the Bin Laden family have alot of it, and have long since cut of ties to the black sheep of the family, I thik it's an irresponsible statement to make. The Bin laden family are well respected investors and i'm sure these comments wouldn't go down well with alot of the money men from Saudi Arabia, Quatar etc.

true enough i suppose, but if he has no intention of ever going into business with them it doesnt really matter. but i get your point.

If any player deserves the 'let him rot in the reserves treatment' it's this 3.gif

The amount of times he's swayed on whether he wants to stay or go bugs the life out of me. I don't know where this reported interest from Spuds or Arsenal is comng from, as he has down sweet FA to merit it.

At least he's put an end to the Spurs supporting rumours....
Ashley, whose Sports Direct empire announced a huge drop in profits yesterday, has also moved to end suggestions his real passion is for Tottenham.

He said: "It's not true. I absolutely hate Spurs and always have done.

Of course he hates Spurs, he was a Chelsea season ticket holder before he discovered his "love" of the Barcodes...;)

Reckless me aul mucker, I knew as soon as someone posted that Ashley quote you'd be in with your mandatory wisecrack.

But sure I guess you have to blow some steam, with it looking increasingly more likely that your Captain wants to move to the Reds, and you star buy looks like he needs to be put on the Paul Robinson diet if he is to avoid being squashed in the premiership. ;)

That'd be the star buy who had a tour of Newcastle before signing for us? Must have been put off by all the images of topless Geordies flashing their moobs in the Bigg Market.

Come to think of it, who else are you chasing, I need to let the lads know the rest of our close season signings...:p

Yeah that would be the little pecker. Rumour has it that managed to sway the deal by telling him the big club from North London wanted him sign him.. He's still perplexed as to why the jersies are white and not red. :pac:

Looks like there is some promising news coming out from Gallowgate these days

    - Pablo Aimar

Various papers have us linked strongly with a move for Aimar. I will admit that I haven't seen him play much in the last year or two, but back when he was at Valencia he was a real maestro. At 7 million I think he is worth a punt, particulalry with KK at the helm, he should be the right man to get the best out of a play maker like Aimar.

There is of course the risk that he could be Emre Mk II, but with teams like; Pompey, Everton, Viila, Spuds, being more attractive destinations for many players, we will have to take calculated risks. I think though that the potential benefits that could be reaped from Aimar getting back on form is definitely worth the risk, certainly at £7 million.

    - Nigel De Jong

Again, various papers have us linked with the Dutch international Nigel De Jong. He impressed me at the Euros, and a young defensive midfielder is exactly what we need. At £3 million, he looks a bargain.

I think a Mackem, or perhaps even a Spud, must be envious, as someone's done a hatchet job on his Wikipedia page:
Nigel is somewhat of a controversial footballer with his off field antics and reiterated this early in 2008 when he split up with his girlfriend and then just 3 days later went and married singer Will Young at a brothel in Amsterdam. When quizzed about it by national press he caused a stir by saying "I just like to party. Wild parties yeah. Michael Barrymore is a hero of mine."

    - Milner

Looks like Jambo wants to stay at the club, despite interest from Liverpool.

    From the Mirror:
A source said: "James is just after parity with other players. He has spent time one on one with Kevin Keegan and is excited by working with him. He loves the place and doesn't want to leave but there are market values."

Give the lad a new contract I say. Up until his injury, he was our best player last season, and one of the few, pre-KK's revolution, that looked committed to fighting for the cause. We need to hang on to our young talent, and I really feel that under Keegan, Milner could push on and become the genuine article that he has been promising to be for the last couple of years.

    - Insua

It looks like we could have a trio of new Argies at the club as their are reports that we are interested in taken Insua from Liverpool on loan. I know a fair few of the lads on the Liverpool thread seem to rate him highly, and if he's taken on loan, surely nothing to lose. We need both cover and competition at left back, as Jose needs to be pushed for his place, in order for him to continue to make progress.

I have to say, I think the 3 wise men and KK are finally starting to gel, and we seem to be going for the right targets these days. Howay the Toon!

Loads of websites including the setanta sports website has confirmed we have signed that Bassong guy from Metz, he was on trial all last week and played at the weekend against Doncaster.

Still no new news on the whole Collocinni situation, rumours going around that he will sign at the end of the week.

More Ashley looking to sell stories in todays rags, overshadowing our all but done €11.5m deal for Coloccini. I've always had faith in Mike Ashley and still do. He must be really loving it if he turns down a £300m offer from a guy worth £21billion!

    Monday August 4,2008
    By Niall Hickman

IT MAY be just another week in the mad, bad world of Newcastle United, but Magpies owner Mike Ashley says: “I’m just loving it.”

Amid the latest round of revelations that he is about to sell Newcastle to Indian Anil Ambani, the sixth-richest man in the world, Ashley spoke of his adoration for the club and his willingness to stay on at St James’ Park.

I’m loving it,” said Ashley, from the VIP area of Real Mallorca’s Ono stadium.

“I am excited by the new season, of course I am. I am really looking forward to it. I am excited by Kevin Keegan, seeing the team play, all of it. I think we are going to have a bit of fun.”

Ashley, who has spent the weekend in Majorca watching Newcastle play two friendlies in his usual replica shirt and tatty jeans, refused to offer fans any further concrete proof that he will remain.

Last month he invited investors to plough money into the club while he stays in overall control, but he has now received £300million offers from both Ambani’s Reliance Communications, India’s biggest telecoms company, and Singapore-based global investment firm Profitable Group.

Both are serious bids and Ashley has yet to decide whether he will sell up, having put more than £200m of his own money into the club since buying it last year.

In Majorca, Ashley gave no indication he is willing to sell, but club insiders have confirmed that if the offer is right, he would stand down. Ambani’s company have given Ashley only a week to make up his mind and after that any potential deal is off.

A source for Reliance Communications said: “Our people will not stand for any nonsense. They mean business. If Newcastle drag their heels, they will be off to invest somewhere else and show Ashley just what he is missing out on.”

Ashley has received several serious enquiries to buy Newcastle lock, stock and barrel, but Ambani’s offer is understood to be the most attractive so far.

By selling up, Ashley would add to his already vast wealth, but on the other hand the Buckinghamshire-based billionaire is clearly enjoying life as a football club owner.

Three weeks ago Ashley said: “Newcastle is not something you make a profit on. You have to enjoy it and love it. If we had some multi-billionaire that wanted a stake in Newcastle it would help, but sell the club? It is not the same answer.

In the circumstances, Keegan could be forgiven for heading down to Magaluf beach and taking advantage of some happy hour offers to drown his sorrows, following the latest bout of boardroom intrigue – especially as it has come hot on the heels of Joey Barton’s release from prison.

But ever the optimist, Keegan, whose side played Real Mallorca late last night, says he is thoroughly enjoying his second stint at Newcastle, even though he has signed only three players in the summer.

“There is no reason why we can’t have our dreams and we might do better than a lot of people think,” said Keegan. “It is my first summer back and it is very exciting.

“I am really looking forward to the new season. The job is everything I expected it to be. I have a good set of players, who have a great work ethic, and there is a great sense of anticipation in the camp. There are expectations, but it is not just here that there are expectations. At this time of year everyone has them and we are no different.

“We have a lot of quality, international players. We have added one good player in Danny Guthrie, another in Sebastien Bassong and a very good international in Jonas Gutierrez. Hopefully there will be two or three more. If we do that, then we should be optimistic and so should the fans.

“Take Spurs out of it and not many teams have got in three or more players. Look at Aston Villa or Everton. Some clubs have still not done any business.

“I would say two or three more players would be absolutely ideal. In a perfect world we would get that. We are trying to add quality, just like everyone else.”

So what does everyone think of the imminent arrival of our second Argentinian international? Haven't seen much of him but he was ever present for Deportivo last season and much loved by their fans. Very happy with this signing as we've been crying out for a quality central defender to partner Taylor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,312 ✭✭✭Limerick Dude

My friend says he is very like Puyol in terms of his defending and the way he looks :D

Sure he has a few caps for Argentina so he cant be too bad.

We were woeful in the mallorca tournament at the weekend, i know we were missing alot of first team players but it was just horrible to watch .

I actually cant wait to have Barton back in the team, we really need a bit of creativity *awaits barton jokes*

Still think we need to sign a creative midfielder and striker.

    Saw the Hertha Berlin game.
Gutierrez looked a great signing. Not only good going forward and can use left & right feet but he's a hard worker and tracked back consistently. Unlike Laurent Robert or Ginola of earlier years

    Looks good

Still think we need to sign a creative midfielder and striker.

    Awful pity yee sold Emre.

As for striker, maybe could do with one alright, id like to see Owen and Martins play together more though. Sell Smith and replace him with a good backup striker.

What do yee make of Viduka, want him to stay or go? Great player when he's arsed, but so often it seems he only comes good when it suits him (end of season, contract time etc.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,312 ✭✭✭Limerick Dude

Yeah we need to sell smith, but id rather get another striker in before we do sell him as the squad is thin enough as it is.

Keep Viduka for sure, he was a big reason we did so well at the end of last season, he held the ball up brilliantly for martins and owen. However he is injured for the start of the season so thats why i think we need to get more cover in that position.

Yeah it was a pity we sold emre but the guy is injured nearly all the time so i dont think it was too much of a loss.

Deportivo La Coruna have accepted a bid from Newcastle for Argentina defender Fabricio Coloccini.
A statement on Depor's official website confirmed the two clubs reached a verbal agreement last week and that has now been followed up with a formal written offer.
Depor claim the fee could rise to around £10.3million.

Defenders are never a bad thing for us to be investing in ... hefty price tag though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,312 ✭✭✭Limerick Dude

Good result against Valencia, duff and milner with the goals.

Duff has had a pretty good pre season so far and was man of the match against Valencia i think. Keegan has been praising him alot over the past few weeks. Hopefully duff is back to his best and can play a big part this season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,312 ✭✭✭Limerick Dude

    Some great news.

Collocinni has finally signed and is likely to start against ManUSA

Guiterrez has got clearence from FIFA that he is able to play on sunday.

Martins has come back from Nigeria and is set to play on Sunday.

Some other news includes that Owen is likely to miss out on sunday as keegan doesnt want to rush him back, Ameobi is apparently having talks with Ipswich at the moment, apparently villla have lodged a 9million pound bid for Milner.

Righteo, Collocini in the bag. A good defender, but we seem to have a habit of taking good defenders and ruining their careers. I expect to begin the season with a BANG against UTD!

    I would give

    Given: 7
    Taylor:7
    Colloccini:6.5
    N'Zogbia: 5.5
    Beye:6

    Butt:7
    Guthrie:6
    Jonas:7.5
    Milner:6.5

    Duff:7.5
    Martins:7

LOL at idiot Newcastle fans who said Given was 'past it'

Very good game .. even if we had lost that i would have been happy at the desire to play ...

Instead of just hoofing the ball out they attempted to play their way out and done well bar a couple of "give-aways" from zoggy and butt (Didn't look sharp at all)

Guiterrez looks very impressive, and likes to get back. Colloccini seemed to get his head to everything at that height in the box. They both look to be very good signings (who cares who "picked" them)

To play with that much "togetherness" at the start of the season (considering the last couple of seasons) is a god send and to hear KK with so much optomisim as well Before and after the game is great and seems to be rubbing off ... We may have a chance here for the first time in awhile to have a half meaningful season. (fingers crossed)

Those were damn good days. Pity about the rest of the season though.

I can see good stuff for us this season I hope. Excellent performance from us on Sunday.

Helps when the manager is happy beforehand which gives a boost to the players.

Looks like were in for senderos!

    http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11678_4030874,00.html

Not sure if he will be a good buy or not.

One the one hand he is still very young and has bags of experience at the highest level.

On the other hand he quite prone to an ol' fcuk up here and there.

Keegan has been great with the signing he has made so far, so if he thinks he can get Senderos to fulfill his full potential and cut out the mistakes then i think it will be a good buy.

Keegan says we will try and make 3 more signings before the window closes, he wants a defender (probably senderos), a midfielder(creative/attacking hopefully) and a striker (target man)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,609 ✭✭✭Flamed Diving

Well, we are short of cover at the back, so it wont be a bad signing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,342 ✭✭✭✭That_Guy

We could do worse I suppose but some of his performances last year were terrible I thought.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,438 ✭✭✭TwoShedsJackson

Insulting to Senderos as this is, adding him to the squad will not improve Newcastle's defence, so that's saying something.

Maybe we can make him slightly better but it'll be tough work. Arsenal seem to be happy enough to let him leave seeing as they've bought Silvestre.

Seems like we've dodged a bullet. Senderos gone to AC Milan.

What do you reckon the score will be tonight against Coventry?

I'm going for a 3-0 win to us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,312 ✭✭✭Limerick Dude

I think it will be a tough game tonight, coventry arent a bad side and they will have high expectations as they knocked out man utd last year.

Its going to be a scrappy game and both teams will have their chances, i hope we just convert our chances and our class will show in the end.

Martins is injured and duff is a doubt, so we might have to risk owen.

I hope so too. Just a matter of what squad he puts out. It's hard to know who might partner Owen up front.
