What they need is a new centre half, and to either get Ledley King fit [ If he returns to full fitness, hes the ideal dmc] or buy a new one- Zokora is too inconsistant. Also, getting Bentley would be great for them, I can see Lennon fighting with Dos Santos for the left side position.
In the striking position, they are certain to retain their number 1 striker in terms of ablitity and goals[Keane] although Berv. has really brought out the best in him ,so he would be a big loss.
I don't see them finishing top 6 without King fit.

Yup, and I think that Boruc would be just the man for that job really. If I were Spurs I would definately enquire about him.

they need more quality in debt, its not about who has the best 11 you need 16/18 top class players.

Even with all that you need to hope that the current top four make no progression while all this is happening, and Villa and Everton suffer the same for me they are much more likely.

That's interesting, would you describe Villa's squad as quality in depth? As things currently stand they'll struggle to put 7 subs on the bench next season.

Ramos scares me as a manager. Reminds me a little of Rafa. Shrewd.

Think this season may be a little soon, but next i expect them to give it a good run unless Liverpool or Arsenal have upped their game substantially.

Rafa, shrewd haha, Pennant and Crouch are shrewd signings alrite :pac:

Could also remind me of Rafa, a Spanish manager in the PL that most likely won't win the the Premiership next season :P

Whats the word on Berby? him being on the end of Modrics neat passes fills me with dread, i heard in the press somewhere that a deal to Utd is a done deal when the window opens? is that correct, him & Modric would be amazing.

I still think though Spurs wont come within a sniff of 4th place or even top 6. Not with that defence & Midfield. Of course i'll wait til the end of the transfer window before fully judging, but right now im arrogantly sure they wont:pac:.

Clichy signed a new long term deal on Friday.

I meant Flamini, dunno why my keyboard typed Clichy, I'm gonna tentatively guess malevolent elves.

    Gomes done.

    http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/articles/gomesdealagreed260608.html
    Gomes deal agreed

We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with PSV Eindhoven for the transfer of Heurelho Gomes to the Club, subject to the player agreeing personal terms, passing a medical examination and obtaining his work permit.

Goalkeeper Gomes, 27, a Brazilian international, was an ever-present member of PSV's title-winning squad last season, when he conceded only 24 goals in 34 league games.

He made his name at Cruzeiro in Brazil, debuting in 2002 before securing his move to Europe and PSV in 2004.

Since then, he has won four Dutch titles in succession with PSV, reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2004-05.

Gomes will be no stranger to Spurs fans - he was outstanding in our UEFA Cup Round of 16 matches against PSV last season.

Some facts on Gomes from the mirror:

    1) Heurelho Gomes was born February 15, 1981 in João Pinheiro, Brazil, and stands 6'4" in his socks.

    2) Gomes had a poor childhood and, after taking up football at the age of 14, had to walk 6km to training every day.

    3) He started out as a centre forward, only changing to goalkeeping after playing the position in a sand football tournament so as not to get left out.

    4) He is nicknamed 'The Octopus' because of his huge arms (although sadly he doesn't have eight of them).

    5) Gomes played 59 times for Brazilian side Cruzeiro before moving to PSV Eindhoven in 2004, where he's made a further 118 appearances.

    6) PSV fans were initially sceptical of Gomes, reasoning that Brazil wasn't known for producing quality goalkeepers. However, he quickly won the Dutch over, as this tribute video shows:

    7) Gomes has kept clean sheets in 60% of his appearances for PSV in the Eredivisie, a percentage that no other keeper has bettered in the league's history.

    8) He once went 971 minutes without conceeding a goal (between 14/08/2004-12/12/2004) - the second longest period in Eredivisie history. He's since notched up further shut-out streaks totalling 956 and 817 minutes.

    9) Since joining PSV Gomes has helped the side to four consecutive Eredivisie titles, one Dutch Cup victory (in 2005) and the semi-finals of the Champions League.

    10) Gomes made his international debut in the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup when Brazil elected to field an Under-23 squad. He played in five matches, including the final, which Brazil lost to Mexico. Most Dutch fans can't understand why he isn't the asutomatic first choice for the national side, but Gomes has managed to win 17 caps. And, having played in Brazil's 3-0 victory over Argentina there, he's already kept a clean sheet at the Emirates. Which is more than can be said for Paul Robinson..

    Pretty impressive!

Surely he'll be a step up from Blobbo though?

Being honest, I think Spurs will always concede the odd goal. What's important, is that they need to make sure that the midfield gel over the next 2 seasons, and that they retain Berbatov or suitably replace him.

    Was outstanding both times.

As i read today Wenger said they will have to pay 30mil every year to repay their new stadium and that means they need to sell players every year and they now only can buy cheap and young players and forget about some bigger stars. That can be problem for Arsenal in next seasons and make that team weak and finally give chance to Spurs,on the other hand bringing young and cheap players and making stars out of them was so far specialty of Wenger,so not sure if this money "problem" will affect Arsenal

I've been hearing Arsenal are going to fall out of the top 4 for the last 3 years now.

Still waiting for it to happen.

They could probably pay 30m every year without having to sell a top player.

Whilst it probably is true about the money they owe, I think it's mind games what Wenger has said as he is trying to create an underdog 'us against them' mentality in his camp.

severe doubts over the credibility of those quotes. only the NOTW directly attribute them to Wenger but don't say how, when or why he was speaking to them. everywhere else has 'quotes attributed to AW' usually an indication that the quotes are not entirely trustworthy.

They need to stop getting robbed at OT for a start. :D

They need to learn to harass the ref more.

Spurs were always the glamour of English football - the side with style and flair. They'll need to lose that too and be more athletic.

I'd say it's not worth it.

I'd say it won't happen. Newcastle are more likely, and at Arsenal's expense.

Why do people think Spurs are the team that are most likely break into the "top 4"?

I'm looking at Everton first and maybe even Manchester City. Spurs looked poor at the end of last season and I don't think two players are going to lift the squad. They have some good players who are very injury prone so for me the Spurs best 11 is the team least likely to feature over the season.

I think honestly, they need to look to other teams to falter. Ronaldo leaving, Arsenal not buying and Scholari struggling might help, should these events come about.

Then again, Spurs is now looking the hunting ground for bigger clubs that Arsenal were (although they stilla re to some degree) a few years ago. I think they need to focus on keeping their players. A front line that lasts longer than a year playing together might help.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,008 ✭✭✭delija_sever029

I supose reason is coz they have more money than any other team outside top4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,999 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

It had nothing to do with one player leaving the club, but when you see bigger clubs coming in and taking a top player and also seeing Frank Arnesen leaving for Chelsea, its not going to make the players believe that the club is completely focused on taking on the big boys.

When they lost Michael Carrick to Manchester United, it set the club back a long way.
You can go back further and you had Sol Campbell going to Arsenal. You have Stephen Carr who went to Newcastle.

All these were automatic first team picks when at Spurs.

I don't know if the Robbie Keane thing is happening but again that would be another disaster for spurs and further evidence that the club is either not looking after the players or that there is something really wrong at White Hart Lane.

It just seems from when looking in from the outside, and I'm not a spurs fan, that every year they look like they are getting close to the breaking into the elite that something goes wrong the next season and they are back down in the middle of the pack.

    So....

Berbatov likely to leave. Moves being made for Bentley and Arshavin. Attacking line up looking like this

    DMC
    --Bentley----Arshavin----Modric
    Dos Santos--

    Bent

With Lennon, another striker (Milito?), Jenas, O'Hara, Huddlestone for cover

That is not too bad. They look like they can come out of losing Berbatov and Keane a better team overall.

If after that they can get
New CB when when King gets injuried
    New Goalkeeper
    Better DMC

I still think they can step up.

just reading back over old threads, its amazing how predictions can be so off. No offence to OP.

We have a premiership prediciton competition in work where you basically have to pick 3 teams based on last season league positions (one from top 4, one from middle eight, one from bottom eight) We worked out a scoring system based on each teams catagory, so you score points based on each teams weekly performance. Its good crack, anyway the point I am getting to is that I had picked out Spurs as one of my choices. So had most others. Some picked newcastle too. Also all steered clear of Hull, Stoke and West Brom.

I still dont understand how spurs have done so badly, the players are good, the manager was proven, there seems to be no boardroom turmoil. Can the sale of Berbatov and Keane really have messed up the team this much?

anyway, it goes to show that very little is predictable in football these days, as Greavsie said, its a funny old game.

The reasons why have been discussed to death, but I believe their main problem was that when they lost the ball, they simply looked incapable of getting it back.

That and Levy was still a greedy moneygrabber over the Berbatov saga :pac:
