laptop hanging on shut down ?

    just hanging for 20mins somtimes to shut down in the last few days..
    any ideas guys xp sp2 512 ram . d610 dell..

    do you generally just press the power button and do a quick shutdown??? if so it could have messed it up a bit.

    could just need to be cleaned up.

    I would recommend doing a defrag of the hard drive. or two. could take a few hours.

    It could be a virus. not sure. but just try defragmenting it first.

    what software is running. It sounds like there's something trying to shut down, but having difficulty. Does this happen if yoiu start up and then immediatly shut down or is it after you do some surfing etc or work on it?

    PS defrag is also a good option but matbe not needed if theres a bit of rogue software running....

    its just on shuting down . will defrag in a few mins avg 7.5 running on it and comodo fireware and super anti spyware .
    wil post results n a while

    maybe post a hyjack this log or start task manager and tell us what apps are running. If you start up your pc, then do nothing, then shut down - does the same thing happen? Does the End Program.... dialogue box appear on closing?

    finished the defrag... wont shut down when start up .and then close down and ran no programs...
    anyone recomend a program to run throug it to test for hijacking
