I'm looking for some advice about my next games console. I've had a ps1 and ps2 but have heard a lot of good things about the x-box so I'm considering a changeover. I'm not a big games, probably only buy around 4-5 games a year max, I'm not interested in online play or the downloading of demos etc. Games I'm into are like medal of honour, call of duty and the sports sims specifically, soccer, rugby, boxing and wwe. I also like war strategy games but I don't think there's an awful lot of them for consoles??

So I'm looking for some advice on a bundle for either PS3 or X-box. Price difference seems to be about 100 euro more for the ps3 for a similar bundle but in my opinion the blu-ray player is well worth that alone. so money isn't really an option but I am not going to buy something I won't use.

I'm leaning towards PS3 but is the availability of games etc the same on both(new and 2nd hand)

Posted in both x-box and playstation forums, apologies for the repitition.

The PS3 is a fabulous machine and it comes with lots of features as standard that you have to pay a good deal extra for with the 360. ie. Wireless, online play. Also as far as I can tell it has a better track record for not breaking down.

But the selection of games available is a bit of a joke.

The new Metal Gear Solid game is pretty much the only decent game I have for my one. The 360 has a huge selection of great titles.

PS3 has excellent potential though. Just it's unfortunate that so few developers are using the potential.

BluRay is worth getin the PS3 alone, Xbox used HDDVD but thats packed it in. My mum watched Casino Royale on BluRay other week and now shes bookin flights to Lake Como, she couldnt believe the quality, on a FullHD tv it is perfect!

I have or have had MGS4(AMAZING), GTA4(also available on Xbox), Ratchet & Clank(savage game too.) Condemed 2, Oblivion(Also on Xbox too, brilliant game)
    Drakes Fortune, Rainbow 6
    Pro Evo 2008

Load of great games there to pick from, and loads more in the pipeline.

All your regular EA games etc. will be on both consoles, but I like to think they'll be better on PS3 although all the Fanboys would argue...

Either Way you don't have amazing choice, but the PS3 is still less than a year old, but BluRay is worth it big time!

    Choose Wisely

    :D

Buy the PS3 as it is reliable.

All 360's get very hot, overheat and eventually die. MS will cover this under a 3 year warranty but you will be without a games machine for weeks at a time. Google red ring of death and you will see how common the dead 360's are. Plus the 360 is very noisy. The PS3 is silent.

Look at the recent titles for both machines and you will see they are available on both machines so games availabilty is quickly becoming a non-issue for the PS3.

Don't get sucked into the bluray argument. I watched Sweeney Todd on bluray with full HD and did'nt see any huge difference to a normal DVD.

If you intend to use it for bluray only, sit tight for a while as bluray 2.0 is around the corner and the players are going to collapse in price.

If you intend to use it as a casual games machine, dipping in when it pleases you, then buy the PS3.

My 360 is gathering dust and I sold off all the games I had for it. have'nt turned it on once since I bought the PS3.

If you know exactly what games you want you could check out eurogamers comparrission.

Every so often they put up a new round, e.g. Round 11 (at the bottom contains links to other rounds)

    and GTAIV

The selection of new games is pretty even, but they both have exclusives.
I would argue online play is better on 360 but for some reason your not interested in online play:rolleyes:

Ive had PS3 for about 8months no problems but I've also had 360 since May 2006 and no problems.

I think overall the strength of the PS3 is the bluray player, however the strength of the Xbox is Live(online).
However each game may be slightly different on each console, e.g. EA sports games tend to be a bit better on 360

Thanks for the replies, I think this would make a good sticky as I've gotten some good responses on the x-box forum too. My main concern over the xbox is this heat problem which seems fairly widespread. The online play aspect is not a concern for me as I live in the sticks so I've mobile broadband only which apparantly ain't fast enough(although I have managed 100k per second downloads) It seems that x-box have a wider variety of games just by sheer volume of boxes in the shops and it's cheaper too.

I've been told that the next generation of blu-ray is just around the corner so expect a drop in PS3 prices then. I'll have a browse around the online shops and see what games are available that appeal to me, otherwise it seems a fairly even split.

You can expect the PS3 to follow its normal price curve , with price drops every so often , the same as any other console , but dont expect it to drop based on next gen blu ray ,

The PS3 , due to its regular updates , is the most advanced blu ray player on the market and has been for some time , standalone players have been playing catch up to it since it was released !

Profile 2.0 standalones have only just come on the market , the PS3 has been profile 2.0 for months !

Whenever I see a title of a thread like this one I cringe lol. They always end badly.

Anyway, I have both consoles (well ones my dads) but if online play isnt an issue for you then theres no competition. Get a ps3.
Xbox was better but IMO this year ps3 has passed it out.

Good luck whichever you decide on.

I have both consoles and here's my 2 cents.
Out of the box with a PS3 you get a blu-ray player, my main reason for getting one. You get a wireless controller which includes a USB cable to charge it, it's wireless and the online service is free. I'm not into online gaming so that doesn't really concern me. But you can download movie trailers & games demos for free so...

Xbox, you'll get a wireless controller which runs on batteries. So you have to buy a cable and rechargable battery kit. The controller is a lot heavier and bulkier than the PS3. M y brother couldn't believe how light it was compared to his Xbox. You don't get blu-ray or HD, you have to buy a HD add on, which isn't worth a sh1t now. It is noticably louder. However on one very hot day recently the fan came on on my PS3 and that was LOUD. Way louder than the Xbox. But that's only once it's come on. You don't get wireless. You have to buy a network adapter for it. You have to pay for the online service.

The games are pretty much the same on both consoles, not many exclusives on either. I'm glad I have the PS3 for Metal Gear Solid though. The only thing that persuaded me to get a Xbox was my brother & son have one, so games swaps.

Push came to shove - PS3!

There should be a sticky in the games forum about the 360 against the PS3..There's too many threads like this indeed.

Anyway, I have both as well and tbh from your OP, I think for you you should get the PS3. I mainly just use the 360 to play online cause all my friends play on xbox live and that's pretty much it.

Wow, Im suprised at the lack of support for the 360.

Wii is still kciking all their asses tho.

I've owned a XBOX for the last 3 years and switched to a PS3 this morning.

If you want multiplayer and a great list of games get the 360.
Xbox live is miles ahead of Sony at the moment.
I had the elite and 2 twice it red ringed on me but Smyths changed it for me no problem. The 3rd replacement was the Falcon model and they run cooler and quieter than the previous ones.

I am impressed with the PS3 and the amount of things you can do with it..like replacing the 40gb with the 320gb hard drive :) plus the fact you can install an os then as well on it..ubuntu here I come..
Not so impressed with the list of games so far but I hope this will improve in the next 6 months or so.

Did you trade in your 360 for a PS3? If so where did you do it and what sort of deal did you get?

I have decided to ditch my 360 as the fan is just too damn loud and I want bluray!

this is what the guiness world record edition says

And why would that be? Why don't you instead look at the games available and forthcoming instead. There's no point in having the most powerful games console when there aren't any decent games available. Also specs are one thing but most tests show that in game there is very little difference between the 360 and the PS3. In fact the 360 slightly out performs the PS3 in most multiplatform games.

Next time try to make a better argument instead of fanboy baiting.

I bought a 360 at xmas 06 and mainly the reason why I got it was becuase I was so impressed with gears of war becuase it was nothing like i had seen at the time. But ever since I got my PS3 i haven't even touched my 360. I prefer the PS3 controller over 360 controller any day. I mean have you ever tried playing Pro Evo on the 360 controller? Plus I don't like the big battery pack sticking out the back of the 360 controller.

Everyone says that the game selection on the 360 is greater. That's an obvious fact seeing as the 360 is out longer. Plus I have faith in Sony that they will deliver better first party games in the future. Online isn't really big to me because the only games i ever play online is sports games and Metal Gear Online and I think the PSN is a brilliant service considering you don't have to pay a "multiplayer tax" like on 360.

Not that I am trying to say that hardware is the be all and end all, but, software-wise, there aren't too many good exclusives on either side yet. Most of the best games for each platform are multi-platform releases (COD4, PES, FIFA, Burnout Paradise, Devil May Cry 4, etc.)

Exclusives like Halo, Gears of War, Mass Effect for the 360 and Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, GT5: Prologue for the PS3 are starting to show each consoles strenghts. The more exclusives that come out for each console the better. This pushes the game's quality up as they are being custom-made for the hardware and not generically made to suit both consoles.

In fact, hardware is becoming more irrelevant the more multui-platform games are being released.

I'd get a PS3 if none of the current 360 exclusives excite you as there won't be many more must haves exclusive for 360 this gen IMO.

Mostly because its been out so long and the number released so far would make me suspect its hit its peak where as the PS3 should have some great first party games coming along shortly. If you were always a Playstation person then I'd probably get a PS3. The machine has some amazing features and more coming.

I have been very impressed by Sony's attitude given the PS2 didn't live up to its hype technology wise (obviously delivered on the games front though).

As developers got to grips with the PS2 it produced some stunning titles. From a graphical/world size point of view later titles such as Shadow of the Colossus make the PS2 release titles looks decidedly primitive. Here's hoping the later PS3 titles demonstrate the potential of the cell processor fully.

i'm sick to the teeth of people going on about the greater amount of titles available for the 360. since late 2007 there has been an pretty much equal amount of quality releases. most big games on both formats and exclusives on both formats. the ps3 has had the better exclusives this year so far in my opinion.

yeah the 360 still has had more releases probably but look at the reviews on gamespot.com and you will see their scores which are mostly 3.5/10 to 5/10

so this argument of xbox having more quality titles is useless and very very tiring at this stage.

how much time do you people have to play games?? if you're complaining about the lack of titles on the ps3 then just maybe you need another hobby

Wider variety means more choice. Nobody is suggesting that the 360 players intend to play every game that scores well. If anything, having limited time to play games means that you want to have the widest selection possible so you can spend that limited time playing the game that suits you best.

As it stands the range available for the 360 is wider than the PS3. That's a valid selling point, if perhaps not a deal breaker.

That's what I'm worried about tbh. With all the big companies going multi-platform, neither console will be getting many games that push the boundaries. These games will be created to suit both consoles and will not play to either consoles strenghts.

If developers want to release multi-platform games that do push each console, then separate teams should work on each product and features should be custom-built for each consoles capabilities.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 300 ✭✭superweld

point still stands though. since late 2007 there are as many quality ps3 releases as 360 ones.

for someone buying a console now there is plenty to choose from with both consoles and quantity of games shouldn't be an issue.

you are buying for the present and future after all, not for the year 2006 + 2007

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,893 ✭✭✭Davidius

    Get a Wii. =D

I don't have a PS3 so I don't have any real opinion on either in terms of comparison. Personally, I wouldn't buy it because the only PS3 game that I actually care about is MGS4 but that's just me.

If you don't have a good enough internet connection then the 360 is not nearly worth as much. As far as the overheating problem is concerned, I've never had that issue. It is a bit loud and it does give off a bit of heat. These have never really been a problem for me as the game volume is usually loud enough anyway and I actually open my window.

Most people's systems overheat because they cram the powersupply behind everything where no air can get though. I leave mine out in the open and I've never had a problem.

I was merely pointing out that every iteration of the Playstation console has had laser problems, it's not my fault some people took it too seriously and had a whinge about it.

I sold it on boards (xbox elite+13 games & hd drive + 15 movies) for a PS3+200cash. The PS3 was only 4 months old and I was happy to let it go for this as there was no was I was going to get what I wanted for it.
Don't think Gamestop are doing a good deal on elites but it's no harm to call in and check them out.

Best thing is you can swop the hd in the ps3 no bother (unscrew old one, screw in new one :)) and bingo I now have a 320GB drive in it.
Copying all my movies to it at the moment..pity it doesn't have mkv support though for hd ripped movies.
