Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

PS3 or X-box

I'm looking for some advice about my next games console. I've had a ps1 and ps2 but have heard a lot of good things about the x-box so I'm considering a changeover. I'm not a big games, probably only buy around 4-5 games a year max, I'm not interested in online play or the downloading of demos etc. Games I'm into are like medal of honour, call of duty and the sports sims specifically, soccer, rugby, boxing and wwe. I also like war strategy games but I don't think there's an awful lot of them for consoles??

So I'm looking for some advice on a bundle for either PS3 or X-box. Price difference seems to be about 100 euro more for the ps3 for a similar bundle but in my opinion the blu-ray player is well worth that alone. so money isn't really an option but I am not going to buy something I won't use.

I'm leaning towards PS3 but is the availability of games etc the same on both(new and 2nd hand)

Posted in both x-box and playstation forums, apologies for the repitition.

It's tough. There's not much difference for either of them for you. I'm a 360 fan but for me I like some of the 360 exclusives and I'm a fan of the controller and BluRay means nothing to me.
But for you exclusives don't seem to matter, and you're used to the PS3 controller and BluRay might be a benefit so I'd say from your specs PS3 might be the way to go.
The PS3 is quieter than the 360 too.

When you say you're a fan of strategy games do you mean RTS games? If so the 360 has a few of those that the PS3 doesn't. C&C 3 (2 versions), Universe At War, Supreme Commander (in a week or two), Halo Wars (in the distant future).

Check the games too though. There are exclusives for either console. So if you really want Metal Gear Solid 4 there's only one console to go for. Similarly if you really need Halo then there's only one console.

argument might be a bit 1 sided as you asked on a xbox forum.
for me it was xbox for 2 reasons, PS3 was too expensive, there was a huge rack of cheap secondhand 360 games and no ps3 ones!!

I chose xbox for the same reasons as Slig really, but also because Xbox Live is much better than PSN. This might not be a consideration for you if you don't want to play online, but you might feel like giving it a go at some stage, especially with the games you mentioned. Call of duty in particular is a blast online!!

If your just interested in 3rd party First person shooters and sports sims then go for 360 simply because its cheaper

If you have broadband I really recommend signing up for xbox live because most shooters are very short nowadays and single player mode can nearly be completed in one sitting and the online realy extends their life + its great craic if you find a sound group to play with online

This sort of post has been done before - you're going to hear us X-box types on this forum say how much better it is than the PS3, and visa versa on the PS3 forum.

To be honest, they both have their advantages / disadvantages. I had a PS1 / 2 before and made the switch to the 360 this time last year. I can honestly say I will never regret the change. My bro in law has a PS3, but the PSN isn't a patch on X-Box live, and once you play an online you won't go back - I can (almost) guarantee it.

For that reason alone get an X-Box.

Sinceyou only like certain games .shooters ,etc ,have a look in the shops ,theres loadsa cheap 360 games,cod4,2,3 medal of honor ,with a much wider range for the 360.YOU can join xbox live, silver is free , download any demo you want free, i can see no reason 4 you to buy a ps3.MAKE sure get 360 premium with the hardrive, the elite has hdmi out.XTRAVISION always seem to have 360 games 20euros or less .
XBOX live is great for playing war or strategy games online cod is very popular online ,with many modes and maps to play on.

They now all have HDMI out, the elite comes with a HDMI cable, the rest don't(same as PS3)

Thanks for the replies, I think this would make a good sticky as I've gotten some good responses on the Playstation forum too. My main concern over the xbox is this heat problem which seems fairly widespread. The online play aspect is not a concern for me as I live in the sticks so I've mobile broadband only which apparantly ain't fast enough(although I have managed 100k per second downloads) It seems that x-box have a wider variety of games just by sheer volume of boxes in the shops and it's cheaper too.

I've been told that the next generation of blu-ray is just around the corner so expect a drop in PS3 prices then. I'll have a browse around the online shops and see what games are available that appeal to me, otherwise it seems a fairly even split.

    It is widespread.
On the plus side MS increased the warranty to 3 years for this issue. And it's meant to be hugely reduced on all 360s manufactured over the last year.

I've two 360s (one is 2 years old, the other is 8 months, although it's also an older model) and I know 4 other guys that have a 360. None of us have had to send our 360s back (yet). I suppose for every one of me though there'll be a pile of guys saying they've had to send every 360 back 10 times.

What do you mean about the next gen of BluRay? The PS3 can be upgraded to the new BluRay specs when they come out (they've had several so far) so your PS3 player won't become obsolete and it's not going to drop in price for that. If you mean a new disk format there's nothing to worry about there for years yet. BluRay is currently a small percantage of movie sales. They're hardly going to bring out another disk format.
