Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Bokeh Babes

The Bokeh Challenge is for new photos so I thought it might be an idea to start a "Best Bokeh" from yore thread. Here is my favourite. Circles of confusion make great effects, but I tend to like Bokeh that sweeps across the background.

(I removed the offending graphics link,as it was not properly positioned on the screen. Will re-post at the end of this thread.)

    That is glorious. Well done!

I posted this thread twice, by mistake, and can't work out how to take the previous version away.
Also, my photo has taken on a life of it's own, turned into a widget, and keeps shooting away onto the rhs of the page on my computer.

Sorry... Perhaps a mod could rescue the situation, please.

Many thanks, Fajitas. For some reason my photo continues to leap, uncontrollably, to the right. Can anybody explain what causes this, please?

Looks good from this end, but when you're posting, put a couple of lines between the

Thanks again. I'll try that tomorrow.

Bokeh (from the Japanese boke ボケ, "blur") is a photographic term referring to the appearance of out-of-focus areas in an image produced by a camera lens.

v nice bokeh, i'm guessing 1.4 from the curve of the bokeh?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,299 ✭✭✭PixelTrawler

Is Bokeh just out of focus / blurred background or specifically when you get curved blurry circles - i took this at f1.4

    I'd say ƒ1.8 :P

the lower the ap, the more diaphrams thus curvier the circle

It's not due to the amount of diaphrams, but their shape ;)

the increased number causes the shape change no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,299 ✭✭✭PixelTrawler

ah, i only have a fast prime a while and I was wondering why you get an almost circular pattern with extreme DOF

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Yep, but it depends just as much on their shape when it comes together.

When the lens is wide open, it's at its most perfect circle, hence the best bokeh wide open - As you stop down, the aperture usually begins to form more lines in its shape, and that's when the shape of the aperture blades comes in :)

    lets not forget spherical aberration
The effect is proportional to the fourth power of the diameter and inversely proportional to the third power of the focal length, so it is much more pronounced at short focal ratios, i.e., "fast" lenses.

    back to pictures maybe :pac::pac::pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,393 ✭✭✭AnCatDubh

ouch.... my head is beginning to hurt. I think i preferred it when it was just the nice 'blury' bit behind the in focus bit. Too much wikipedia for one night methinks

Shape and amount. I have 6, most pictures here have only 5.
If you place something in front of the lens (but very very close to the lens), the bokeh shape is going to change. That is used by 4x, 6x and 8x stars filters. You can get very similar result by using metallic mesh.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 10,686 Mod ✭✭✭✭melekalikimaka

or a piece of card wih a star cut out

But a lens with say 8 blades at 1.4 still has 8 blades at 22,
its obvious smoother, but the curve of the blades affects it too, as in 6 straight blades will appear pretty hexagonal even when pretty wide

Fajitas! is right. At f1.8 I get almost perfect circles, but moving to f2.8 gives very well defined pentagons. I assume at wide open, you're actually seeing the shape of the lens hole itself, as the blades are opened wider than it.
