Berlusconi - What's he at?

In its news round up this week, The Economist reported that:
Italy's prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, endorsed plans to suspend certain long-running trials, including by coincidence a corruption trial against him in Milan. Mr Berlusconi also said he wanted a law to suspend cases against holders of top state positions.

Is there any chance that the international community, or more particularly the EU (who after all made a crackdown on corruption a precondition on joining for the Accession 10 in 2004), will rally round and tell Mr Berlusconi to cop on?

Why are Itialian politics such a joke? I mean the Romans gave the world a legal system that is still in use today. Why are they incapable of governing themselves today?

because italy is a fractiour group of statelets that were unified during a period of intense nationalism throughout europe and since then has shown itself to be a nation more divided than ever.there was a period of near stability under mussolini and since then there has been no one capable of holding the country together for any length of time, bar the corrupt berlusconi.

As bad as ours are they are not anywhere near the Italians. Just look at Naples.

    That's highly debatable.

Transparency International places Ireland at joint 17th, with Italy at 41st.

Admittedly corruption will always be a dark figure; the TI figures are working off perceived corruption. But thats a significant difference nonetheless.

I see Berlusconi as no worse than CJ or Ahern.

The people of Italy see Berlusconi as a man who is massively sucessful in his business life and are hoping he can impart that on the country as a whole. They are willing to turn a blind eye to his antics.

Here in Ireland people think our leaders are whiter than white as they stick two fingers up at the population and blatantly lie to us, while running the country into the ground.

Who are the bigger fools ?
