Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I've added the both of you so I hope you'll both be able to keep up with it?

Only three spots left. Hopefully we can get this set up today. Come on folks. ;)

I was just thinking, at the end each person could give 1 vote on who they think has the best roster (other than their own) and that way a winner could be declared. Sound good or too complicated?

Maybe the best two or three could be chosen by each person. Because you're more likely to end up with a draw using only one vote. Better than using a poll anyway, that wouldn't work

It's a good idea but It would be tough to make the poll because I don't thin you can do 20 options? I think a discussion thread is a must so as to keep the draft pick thread full of draft picks only

One more question, not sure if it was asked already, but if I choose Ric Flair, do I get the Flair who styled and profiled his way through the 80s or the shadow he was in WCW around 2000? Basically, I'm asking are the guys valued at their peak?

It's guys in their peak so if someone chooses Hogan for example they get the Hogan from the eighties and not the guy that makes sporadic appearances these days. :)

On the issue of selecting the winner, wasn't something done before on this forum, I think maybe it was by Vince, where we had to pick three things and you got points for each pick? Maybe it was to decide wrestler of the year? I can't remember. Perhaps something like that would work. Everyone chooses their top three and we calculate the points at the end.

I think maybe the first post in the thread could be continually edited.

The first post could contain each username and their current roster, and who's pick is next, etc.

Yeah that might help people out. Good idea.

Still three spots open for anyone interested. Come on, don't be put off! (Me thinks Bubs was right about having just 15 people :o)

You can only edit for 3 days after the original post I think, so that won't be able to happen.

Looking forward to seeing how this mofo pans out.

...now back i go to read through the whole thread so i know what im getting myself in for.

Was this the thing on the soccer forum where you picked your team/roster and hoped nobody else picked your picks so you got them? then in the 2nd rd etc you would try again till you filled out your roster of 20. if so with 20 posters we are bound to keep pickling the same people (this Q might not warrant an answer afrter i read the whole thing...ill edit if so)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Was that on the boards.ie soccer forum, Bounty Hunter? Because I heard they tried something like this before. In this one though you can't pick the same people so once someone's selected they are unavailable to other rosters.

I've just added you now. Two slots left to be filled now. Hopefully we can fill it up by this evening.

it was, except everone selected a team via pm to the organiser (would be way too much work for you with a full roster and 20peeps...and a life assuming you have one :D) and then at the end of each round the picks they made that nobody else made where posted as their team. i.e if you picked Fabergas, Van Persie and Ferdinand plus 8 others that were picked by others these players would be listed as your team and in rd2 youd need to pick another 8 and hope nobodyu picks your players in that rd i.e pick tactically. Main difference apart from the PM'ing is 1pick at a time in this thread.

anywhoo, just finished reading through and i like the idea and will def commit to giving it a go although I would agree with Bubs in saying that whoever draws No.20 should also get No.21 as should No.19 also get 22 as i think despite it just being luck of the draw otherwise the balance would be hugely tipped towards those with the early numbers. for instance the first person might get (just an example) Rd1: The Rock? & Rd2: (pick21) Big Show? as apposed to the guy who gets drawn last and ends up with Rd1:Macho Man? & Rd2: (pick 40) Christian?

I see the point you're making but I think it was Minto that said if we apply a system like that, whoever got the first pick will end up waiitng an age for their next pick.

Perhaps people's order could be taken into account when determining the best overall roster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,767 ✭✭✭Minto

MNG, maybe (if ya have the time between picks) you could do a random draw for each round. Thereby someone who has 3rd last pick in round one, might have 2nd pick in round two etc. etc. It's more work, but would prob be more fair!

suppose unless people were willing to commit to make a draft pick every day or be skipped it would take ages, which i couldent see happening. Maybe a time-limit per draft rd might be needed though.

and yeah maybe take peoples order into account although ive no idea how that would work.

maybe if you just said 19 instead of 20 and start now it would work faster...

should be loads of time as rds might take ages waiting on people he could even do all the draws at once.

I'd be fine with having draws after every round if others are up for it.

On the issue of time-limits, how about everyone has 48 hours to make their pick? Fair? Should there be more time than that? Less? We really don't want to wait forever for some people to make their minds up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,767 ✭✭✭Minto

Yea, I think 48 hours is fair enough, maybe even cut it down to 24, but 28 is def ok with me!

OK we have twenty members now. With regards to VR or anyone else who missed out and wants to participate, I can stick you on a reserve list.

To be honest there's a few names on here who I'm sceptical will want to commit to it.

Okey doke. If you, or anyone else, change their mind and want to be involved just drop a line and maybe something can be worked out.

OK I'll do the draw tonight and the order will be announced. I'll do it old-school by picking names out of a hat.

We seem to be decided on the time limit for choices being 48 hours. If it's your turn and you don't make your choice in that time then you will be skipped.

We really can't have anyone holding things up and breaking the flow so would it be too harsh to propose that anyone who fails to make their choice is eliminated? What do you all reckon? That would be my main concern.

i reckon it should be 24 hours. I mean, im sure everyone who has entered in has a readily-available internet connection. If you cant spare 20 minutes every 24 hours then why enter?

if someone misses out on a draft pick early they probably wouldent mind dropping out as their chances would have diminished anyway. ive no problem with this and think its fair, afterall you asked everyone to be sure they could commit to it.

    Well how about this...

A 24 hour time-limit rule. If you miss your turn you won't be eliminated but your turn is skipped. If it happens a second time though you will be eliminated.

We mainly want a rule that encourages a quick flow but isn't too harsh on people.

Another question or two, I've started looking through wikipedia for picks, anyway, how far are we going back? Until '54 or '63? Also, if we have to have a tag team, do they actually have to have teamed together or can the team be fantasy?

The draw to arrange the order will be tonight. We're just trying to determine what a fair time limit would be for people's picks. Any thoughts? All viewpoints welcome.

I think 24hrs is a fair time limit but if someone misses their turn a PM should be sent and they should be allowed return and pick anybody unpicked. It would help the game run smoother IMO

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

I would say no. I know that would be a bit harsh on those who have kept up with the challenge though.

I would suggest it could go back as far as the creation of the WWWF which I think was '63 as you say.

For tag teams, they can't be fantasy teams. They have to have been recognised tag teams.

I'd be fine with that although I think if people persistently miss turns it would get a bit ridiculous PMing after them which is why I think a second miss of a pick should mean elimination.

I think this is a better way of looking at it (i could be getting it all wrong, but i think it works like this)

Imagine Vince was creating a 4th brand, you can take any wrestlers in WWE history, and using their past, you have to compete with the rest of us, to convince vince that your roster would be superior.

So dream teams wouldn't be allowed, and you'd have to base everything off real life's past.

    eg:

"Jeff would be good because he does plenty of high spots which keep the crowd entertained, is a big name so can sell his fair share of tickets, has teamed with matt, bubba ray, triple H and others so he is easy to work with amongst the brand, plus he's main evented and been a curtain-jerker so he's flexible and wont get in a mood if hes not in the spotlight."

Those would all be positive points you could make about him if you picked him.

But like i say, i still dont know if i've got the grasp of the game yet, so dont take my word for it.

That's more Around the Horn territory. TBH, the way these things tend to work out is that some of the rosters become much stronger early on and everybody knows which ones are the best, and that's when everybody starts arguing over the positives and the negatives. Quite simply best roster wins and most people will haves aces up their sleeves (I know that I have 1 that will certainly be stolen)

Just a question for MNG, does potential ability and age come into this at all. I.E. could you argue that Brock Lesnar and the Rock for example, reached the height of their wrestling careers at a remarkably young age while ignoring the way they turned their back on the business, and just assume that they could have had the longevity of a Hogan?

I think the way it would work is you compare the guys at the height of their careers. For example, I noticed someone on the soccer thread choosing Damien Duff when he was in awesome form around 2005 and saying at that time he was as good as any player who had played for Chelsea.

So I guess if someone was to choose Rock or Lesnar then you take them at the points when they were at the height of their careers and make a case for why they are useful to your roster. I guess for Lesnar you'd argue he is a freak of nature, Rock's great charisma etc.
