Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Just an idea for a sticky that I got off RKQ. What would be one tip for anyone thinking of starting there very own self build.

My top tip is that give much more heed to professional advice than advice from family & friends. Also ask questions about everything. If your contractor truly knows what he is doing he shouldn't have any problems explaining it to you

Buy a spirit level and check everything. ( blocks, joists, studs, slabs, frames etc)
Do not assume your blocklayer or carpenter uses a spirit level!

Keep the site clear especially once the roof is on.
A clean workplace is kept clean (cleaner) and people work neater in a neat envirnoment.

Organise, organise, double check and organise.

    Get a fixed price contract!

Design the house before you start building and build it that way. Saves time and money.
Builders extras can be quite a shock as all the small additions come to a lump sum at the end.

Don't rush anything, you only get one chance to get a lot of things right without huge mess and hassle.

Get as many opinions as possible from people, then get professional advice and then decide what YOU want. Remember that while every friend and relative will be looking around while its been built and while you move you in, after a few months its only you and the rest of the people living in the house that will be seeing it every day so make decisions that you want.

If something seems too cheap its probably for good reason. Security!!!! Secure your site during building, make sure you keep the site clean, this is one thing anyone can do and a clean site is a safer site.
