    Hi lads,

Posting this on behalf of my brother.
The bonnet release cable has snapped on his E46 BMW. He checked the cable inside at the lever and it looks fine so it's broke somewhere from the bulkhead to the release under the bonnet.

We took out the two kidney grills today and had a look but couldn't see any easy way to pop the bonnet. The cable is just out of reach over the rad.
Noticed there's two spring locks....neither one releasing.

Can anyone suggest what we can try before he has to shell out €€€ ??
Is removing the bumper an option (if it's even possible?)

He was told today the is common enough on BMWs?

Thanks guys for anything you can suggest.

Ok, did some reading and let me say GOOD LUCk with this. Be prepared for a 5+ hour job just to get the hood open if the cable broke past the passenger compartment.

if it's broke in the interior, remove the kick panel, access the cable, and pull HARD with locking pliers while someone exerts downforce on the hood. It should pop.

Broken past that? Remove the inner fender and try to access the remaining cable. do the same, pull HARD and have someone put force on the hood.

    2 choices for last resort...

Remove grills, remove bumper, use a LONG screwdriver to unscrew the 2 downward facing hood pins and it should pop open to the safety catch. Downside, you have to totally readjust the pins and everything after.

second choice: remove grill, remove bumper, use a bright light and a small prybar to pry against the hooks that hold it shut. Passenger side first (side opposite the pull handle), then drivers side.
    (source...)

    Cheers lads.

Ended up cutting the two bonnet spring pins.
He now has to source a set tomorrow. Bit drastic but it's done the job

Oh, cable had come loose and not actually snapped.
