Hi Guys, just wondering if anyone in the Dublin 6 area had been upgraded yet.

I'm currently on a 6mb connection has anyone got upgraded to a faster one in this area?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭Ravenholm

can anyone on the 20mb package using a wireless router tell me what kind of speeds that they are getting over wireless?

I mentioned earlier in this thread that my Belkin G+ Mimo is only giving me around 6 meg over wireless and 11meg wired. :(

Is anyone using a Wireless N router and if so are you getting the ull 20meg over wireless?

    thanks

Hey, I got the 20mb installed yesterday. The first thing i did when i got in from work was download one of the files recommended in this thread. The speed stayed at 1mb-1.1mb for the entire download which made me think they only gave me the 10mb package. I rang them yesterday evening and was told it takes a few hours to reach top speed, but here i am again today topping at 1.1mb/s. Should i wait a few more days and see or do ye reckon your man on the phone was talking ****e?

Probably talking ****e. I'm having problems too with my "20 mb" connection. Lucky to get 6 mb that in the evening. Seems to be a common problem in dublin 1/8. Where are you?

Clonmel, I dont know anyone here that has any problems with the speed. I'll ring them again and see what they say.

Rang them last night to double check that the engineer would be here today between 13.30 and 17.30, was told that was the case and if there was any hassle to ring them.

Lo' and behold no engineer shows up, rang them and they tried to tell me I cancelled the appointment last Wednesday. Lost the plot, hung up and rang back to get a different operator who had a clue. Was told the appointment was only put in the notes and never put through so they're going to send the engineer Saturday morning instead.

I'm sooooo looking forward to my NTL experience ....

That was the problem i had. I was getting 10 meg over wireless but am getting the full 20 wired. Would a better router solve the problem??

It did for me. I changed to a linksys wrt54g router with some third party firmware and noticed a massive difference. Almost full speeds on my wireless connection now.

Hi Guys, just wondering if anyone in the Dublin 6 area had been upgraded yet, I see no mention of it on this thread.

Are the 10/20mb connections available in all areas that support NTL broadband or is it being introduced on a phased basis?

I'm currently on a 6mb connection and have not got a letter from them with any mention of upgrades yet...

Im having the same problem with my download speed over my wireless. I also tried changing to a linksys wrt54g but this didnt help. What was the third party firmware you used?

What speed of wireless card is on your laptop? If its an older one it might only be capable of 11mbs. Try plugging your laptop directly in and going to www.speedtest.net . Will give you an idea of what the problem is....might want to switch off your wireless while doing the test also.

try downloading something frem heanet rather than using speedtest.net. you will get a more accurate download speed. Maybe this file

I have left eircom to upc under the illusion I will get 20mb ,but after a week of having it and a dozen phone calls to them as i get around 4 to 9 mb finally they said they will send an engineer to change the router ! .Well this is their last chance other wise I’m moving back to eircom as they don’t deliver what they advertise

    well
there is alot of happy of NTL customers, but there is alot of unhappy ones.

I think possibly NTL got ahead of themselves pumping everyone up to 20megs..

There is massive contention problems on cable even compared to a standard eircom 2 meg package, with eircom or any dsl provider ur guarentted a certain speed, i.e 24/1 contention, however iv been informed this isnt the case on cable..

To see someone say they`d prefer there old eircom dsl package back to NTL/UPC kinda proves this.

To people with NTL and ur happy with ur speeds, just hope more people from ur area dont catch on cause your gona be faced with the same problems.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,438 ✭✭✭DingDong

There is a team of people who work to resolve contention issues. People with the problem aren't forgotten about. Some times it isn't fix as fast as UPC would like but they do work to resolve the problem as fast as possible.

kamin99 where are you living? Does it not still work out cheaper for 4Mb to 9Mb than eircom's equivalent. I know not much of an argument(your not getting what you expected) but some thing to think about.

UPC have had a hell of a battle to modernise the cable infrastructure in Ireland but they are starting to turn a corner and they are still pumping the money in to created a top notch network. If someone said we would see speeds of 20mb largely available in Ireland(at a cheap price) most people would of said not a chance.

Last time I checked upc's contention ratio is 17/1. Don't know where I heard that though might have actually been on this thread.

I'm with DingDong. Yes contention seems to be bad in spots but even if you're only getting 1/5th of the speed you're meant to be getting, it's still better than eircoms speeds. Still sucks not to be getting the full 20Mbps.

emi_nenCe, you'll have the same path to hosts on the net as every other upc customer.

I have never seen them state their contention ratio - as I have posted here several times I emailed them ages ago asking that question and I am still waiting on a reply.

did someone have to come out and fix the issue for you ?

I'm currently a very happy BT customer, but since the new offers from UPC, I'm seriously thinking of changing over....don't want to hear bad stuff about them though ! :o
