Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Compensation

I am in the school of humanities and I failed a module in semester one and I got 33 per cent in it. However, I passed all my other modules in semester one and two. When I checked my results today it said that my overall result was a FAIL!!! I got eight 60 somethings, two high 50's and a low 70 in all my other modules and I thought that I might have been eligible for a compensation.

I was just wondering does anyone know if these results are good enough to pass by compensation and would it have said on my results portal page that I had passed through compensation or will I be notified by post? Or more likely will I have to repeat the module that I failed?

It would have said P as overall and C beside the module you failed.

I think you can only compensate if its between 35 and 40% but im not sure.

Have it rechecked you can probably scrape 2%

In my experience..and it was long, in dcu..

    a) there are no hard and set rules about compensation, those that are written ive seen over ridden

    b) if you only failed by the that much it IS worth kicking and screaming over..especially if you did well in the others..

My undergrad was as a humanities school student

Sorry… but if it says Fail then it’s a fail. It would clearly state PC if it were a pass by compensation. What a lot of ppl don’t seem to understand is that compensation is not automatic, its always at the discretion of the Programme Board; its not something you apply for… So a repeat for you I am afraid. :(

As Mr.Plough says, you can always ask for a recheck, but in my experience this is a waste of time. If there were going to give you a compensation they would have done it at the Progression & Award Board stage.

Whats the deal if you get compensated, does that mean you're overall degree is a pass or is it still a honours?

    Looks like there's a sh*t-load of non-compensatable subjects.
    That's a bit bent really.

afaik, you cant get compensated on any subject that greater than 5 credits and you need 35+ to be considered for compensation aswell.

how many credits was the module that you failed worth?

you can chase it all the way to the awards board if you want, but it'll cost you a fair bit for every appeal you make.

best bit is to go see the examiner for the module you failed and consider your options from there

I didnt fail anything but someone who I know failed and got compensated and claims he got a 2:1, just thought that if you need to repeat anything or had to be compensated you're grade was automatically a pass.

This is a lot of assumption and possible misinformation going on here.

Here is what the regulations say, and I should stress that I have no specialist knowledge on the topic other than taking the time to read the regulations.

First of all you can get compensation for more than 5 credits:

Compensation may be applied in respect of a maximum of 10 failed credits per year (regardless of the semester in which the failure(s) occur or of how the 10 credits are made up in terms of modules).

Secondly, in line with what H2G2 wrote you need to get 35% or above to qualify for a compensation.

Compensation is applied where the failed module(s) (up to a maximum of 10 credits) is/are failed with 35% or over (or 45% or over in the case of a programme which has a module pass mark of 50%). It is not applied to module marks lower than 35% (or 45% in the case of a programme which has a module pass mark of 50%).

It seems a terribly disproportionate punishment for someone whose overall average might be 60% to fail completely because of one 5 credit module while someone else who scrapes an average 40% across the board could pass by compensating a 10 credit module. Such a case should be fought tooth and nail just in case and I suspect if they want to pass someone they will.

Someone thought you can get only a pass after being compensated – not true:

Where compensation is applied, the overall grade to be awarded is that which corresponds to the overall average mark.

Someone could indeed quite conceivably have got a 2.1 after compensation as long as their overall marks average out at a 2.1 judging by this.

It would say C, because C is Pass by Compensation.

If you look at the bottom of the results page, there is a legend describing what all the results letters mean.

    Cheers,

    Hauk

not sure what the deal is with compensation in relation to other subjects, guys i know had a load of 40's and one 30 odd and passed, i got 30% once and was passed by compensation, some people get 37 and fail..... guess it depends on subject.
