Fahy photo is meant to be very good for cameras. The camera shop on shop street is meant to be terrible. ie. service is putrid.

You will get cameras in the likes of PC world aswell and printers.

Suppose it depends on what kind of shopper you are but you will get much more for your money online. Maybe pick out something you like in a store and then buy online.

Some hardware is rubbish and some is good. How are you going to know if what you are looking at in the shop is actually good??? Rely on the salesperson?? (most of them don't know anything especially in PC world)

The quality brands are usually a safe bet I suppose but it's nice to have a look at a few reviews online to make sure the product doesn't have any serious flaws.

Other way around. Personally I avoid Fahy like the plague due to really bad service from him on a Minolta SLR (long before digital). I've bought several cameras from the Camera Shop, and find their customer service excellent.

For printers, PC World have an excellent selection, and Easons also have a couple in stock.

Hmmm, a google search on the camera shop reveals a very different story.

Have you a vested interest? :D

No vested interest; just a lot of personal experience. Have you?

Fair enough I have never used the camera shop after reading through experiences on google.

Can't understand how some people have had such bad experiences while others seems to have good. I won't be so quick to slate them again in the future I suppose.

It's abit of a mystery though.

You could be sometimes lucky in Argos. They have regular sale brochures with items reduced - often a bargain can be had from that.

Currys (same company as PCWorld) is also an option.

I've never shopped in any camera shop in Galway but the oul man said that Galway Camera shop would be his first port of call because of the good customer service he's always had in there??

Family member of mine bought a pair of Bino's for me in there for my bday and she said that the person assisting her was very helpfuly, went through all details, what was what etc... and they weren't even a very expensive pair

Luck of the draw I guess

I am looking for a digital camera and a small printer to print 6*4 photos either from the SD card or directly from the camera. I hear there is a Canon camera which docks directly into the printer and u can select photos to print.
I am buying it for an association I work for so I will not be paying for it therefore I could not be bothered shopping online for it.

another option for us is a Polaroid
Do any of you know anything about Polaroid cameras? Are they expensive? How much does it cost per photo to use? Are they digital...i.e. are photos stored on an SD card?

Which would be the best option do you think? The one described above or the Polaroid?
    Thanks

Camera shop sometimes have secondhand kits on the window, which could save you a couple of quid. The docking idea is nice, but bear in mind a lot of newer A4 type printers like the Canons, HPs, Lexmarks, and Epsons come with USB/SD ports and a second paper tray for photo paper and do very good quality prints. These printers can be a lot more versatile, especially if you're in an office or stuck for space (I use a HP, which does Fax, Scanning, and Photocopying - for the amount of each I do - not too much - it's very handy). You can get these now for not much more than a specialised photo printer, and they'll have the preview screens and basic editting facilities, too.

A lot of the quality can depend on the type of paper you use (gloss/matte, 145g/120g).

Workaccount - while every business will strive to give the best customer service to every customer, it's unfortunately impossible to get it exactly right every time. Add to that that a person who gets bad service will tell 10 people, while those who get good service might tell one. This applies to both shops mentioned above; you'll find plenty of people who will have gotten good service in Fahys, it's just that I'm not one of them!!!

I know all the above but I think "while every business will strive to give the best customer service to every customer" is miles from reality. What a wonderful world we would live in if that were true.

Canon package in Argos - http://www.argos.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=30001&catalogId=1500001101&langId=-1&searchTerms=5590209++%09&x=0&y=0

They have cheaper too - incl. a HP package for 1/2 price.

If you want better quality/features, it may be worth buying the 2 products seperately.

Got my Nikon d80 in Fahy Photo... couldn't be happier with the service, highly recommended.

The Sony Centre on Eglinton St has a handful of cameras. I got mine there and got a decent deal with a case and memory card also.

I bought my digital camera in Galway Camera Shop 3 years ago. The service was excellent .

I explained that I wanted a camera with high pixels, rechargable (lithium?) battery, and compact for my pocket. I never mentioned how much I wanted to spend and the assistant never asked me. He went through about 5 or 6 cameras but reccomended one above all others. This camera was the 2nd cheapest out of the lot I was shown and I bought it. It was well within my budget of €30

A few weeks later, I went back for an explanation on how to do a few 'tricks' and a different member of staff spent 10 mins showing me.

I have no connections to Galway Camera Shop except for the fact that I am a satisfied customer.
