    Hi,

Which sports shop in Galway can give the best advice on which running shoes to buy?

    Thanks

There aren't any running specific shops in galway as far as I am aware, and the guys in elverys, lifestyle, etc will, unless your very lucky, know nothing about running , your best bet is to go over to the athletics forum and ask there, they should be able to give you a list of good choices for a beginner.

I got good advice from Elvery's and then bought the previous model upstairs in Lifestyle where they sell off old lines.

*I also got some advice from a couple of serious runners I worked with at the time, so I had a fair idea going in.

Depends what you want the shoes for, what way you run, what way your foot strikes the ground etc.

Personally, I don't know of any good running shop in Galway. If you are looking for serious info on the sport, I'd go to amphibian King in Bray (a distance away but worth it). They'll examine how your foot hits the ground and recommend a range of runners that would suit you. The best thing is, this extra service is free, the runners are the same price as any Elvery's etc.

Take it from someone who had chronic knee issues from wearing the wrong type of runners, even though they were from a top brand, not all runners are the same.

I think John Buckley sports in Cork does something similar, if you want expert advice, go to an expert, not some barely paid student.

If you're looking for a shop to do a gait analysis and recommend a proper runner for you're running style then you'll have to look outside Galway to Dublin or Cork. They don't have much of a clue in the sports shops here.

I'll second Amphibian King in Bray - that's where I got my running shoes. Great service.

For proper running shoes get your ass to elverys. They have staff there with a good knowledge on all athlethic and specialist runners/shoes.
I've used Asics gel most of the time, very comfortable for running in. And I ordered a pair of gortex Asics runners saturday for off road running. I was very impressed with the staff.

Poor advice imo. Firstly the staff in Elverys are rarely experts in the reals sense, they might be able to give rough indications of what a certain shoe's main strenght is, but that doesn't make them experts.

Secondly, there are many types of runners (people) and many types of runners (shoes). What worked for one person need not work for another. For example, Asics are widely considered the best running shoe, but it really depends on what way your foot strikes the pavement to determine which class of running shoe you should get, do you supinate, pronate or are you a neutral runner for example, do you have high or low arches, what type of running do you want to do with these shoes. Asiscs make runners to fit all types of people, but most of the staff of Elverys I've encountered rarely go into any level of detail beyond "does it feel comfortable?"

You can do a lot of damage running in the wrong shoes (even if they are of a good brand or good for another type of runner), so imo, go to an expert like Amphibian King or John Buckley.
