Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Euro 2008 Player Of The Tournament

    Simple question really?

For me it was Marcos Senna. Not a flair player by any means by he protected his centre halves so well throughout the tournament, one would forget that they were a dodgy enough pairing. His distribution, tackling and general presence has him head and shoulders above anyone else.

Arshavin had 2 good games, Torres while decent was nowhere near POTM.

Because between himself and Schweinsteiger, they dragged an average German side to the final.

No, Arshavin had 2 absolutely fúcking mind blowing games. Not bad considering he only played 3.

And i also think Pavlyuchenko should be there instead of Villa, had a much better tournament.

Not disagreeing he had 2 great games, but was completely anonymous in his third. I think to be POTM you have to play in the majority of games your team has been involved in.

    But its only personal opinion.

I actually forgot to put him in, but surely Villa as the top scorer should be on the list? Moot point anyway.

TBH where the hell is Casillas?

Torres was good but nowhere near the best player there by any stretch.

For me, bar casillas, the most instrumental players were Robben, Xavi, Schweinsteiger, Fabregas, Senna, Villa and Buffon.

Sneijder was quite influential too I thought. I reckon he'll be the next holland captain.

Xavi got the offical award: http://www.euro2008.uefa.com/news/kind=1/newsid=729378.html#xavi+emerges+euros

Can't argue too much with that :pac:

Cant argue with Xavi, he was class throughout, Id imagine he had the highest passing completion rate. I remember against United his stats were 93% amazing player.

    Yea, xavi was good alright!

I think Casillas and Senna should have both gotten it ahead of him tbh.

I'd rate his tournament on a par with Torres and Iniesta.

    Shut it you.

The poll is clearly flawed. Lock her up and let's all move over to the Xavi Hernandez Appreciation Thread.

Ballack for me.Until the final he dragged Germany through every game.Awesome player.Torres a close second

Ballack was crap in the semi final too.
How on earth can you say he was player of the tournament?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 657 ✭✭✭tomred1

No way shuold Ballack be on the list he disappered in the semi and the Final. I have no arguements with Xavi but i think Senna was more important player for Spain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,535 ✭✭✭Raekwon

David Villa for me. His goals got Spain up and running and secured them enough points to top their group. IMO if he played in the final he would have scored considering the amount of chances Spain created.

Fabregas had a great impact in the latter half of the tournament...Sneijder was impressive, Arshavin (though not in the game against Spain - that being said, none of Russia's players played well)

He didn't play in that match. He didn't play in the second group match either.

Suspension carried forward from him being sent off in the last qualifier vs Andorra.

I know, I was referring to the semi-final.

if people are calling for Arshavin and Fabregas despite their limited time on the pitch, i'm calling for Alonso, was excellent last night when he came on and his performance against Greece was up there as the outstanding performance of the tournament.

I'm laughing at your claim that Alonso was the best player in Euro 2008.

    Because it's laughable.

laughable like Arshavins two good games and Fabregas' good subs appearances?

I agree that player of the tournament should have played the vast majority of the time his team was playing....but if people are using different criteria which they obviously are picking either of those two, then i may as well use my own criteria.

Alonso was brilliant in wat he featured in Euro2008.
