    Hi,

I'm trying to buy a puppy and have found the perfect little basset hound. . . When I asked the breeder if he was registered he said he wasnt IKC registered but was registered to Canine Ireland (www.canineireland.ie) . .

Anyone know anything about this ? We don't want to breed or anything but wan't to make sure the breeder is kosher . .

    Thanks . .

The dogs don't have to be registered at all for the breeder to be a good breeder, but if they are registered to the IKC it is more likely. One thing to bear in mind is the price. If they are not IKC registered then they are probably not microchipped either so they should not be charging the same price as a pup that is IKC reg.

Basset Hounds have hereditary problems, so I would be very careful to do plenty of research on what to look for. Make sure you visit the parents and see them before you even look at choosing a pup. Ensure that the adult dogs are well socialised and cared for and that the pups have been socialised in the breeders home.

Bassets are a pack breed so if you want the pup as a pet it is fairly important that it has been well socialised with people at a young age - actually it's very important with all dogs, but the pack breeds will bond easier with other dogs than people anyway so it's more important.
