What? I think you are thinking of a different joke.

who the hell cares what it is called as long as it is a proper arena at long last not a freaking old warehouse with a few seats (as it was up to now), what a dump the old point was

walking past it the other week it now looks like a proper arena :) the americans call their amazing indoor arenas the united center, the at+t center, American Airlines Arena, the staples center, the europeans have followed with the emirates, the manchester evening news arena, the o2, the allianz arena, we are just following the same route and why not if it brings in extra money

i was there the night vedder said the point joke in june 2000 but alas i would rather hear pearl jam play with better lighting and far better sound than the old point provided

I actually still often say pounds and pence when I'm not thinking (and sometimes on purpose). I'm a bitter old man at heart and nothing will change my ways.

O2 advertising sicks me and whenever I see an ad of theirs I want to dig my insides out and throw it all over the telly. Please don't refer to it as the 02, for the good of all humanity.

That's a different company. I don't even think they've got the full planning permission for it yet.

Was at that, the sound was so bad you couldn't make out anything.
The experience was probably responsible for my reluctance to part with the cash for so many gigs since.

something is going up next to the point, it looks like the point village though rather than the tower, where they put the tower after that is anyones guess

Who cares if you call it the point, or the 02 arena, it will always be a total ****ing ****ehouse. Every gig there bar the Doors of the 20th century and Kanye West was spoiled by tossers crowding, **** sound, **** visibility, ridiculous heat and that wont stop because they added a speaker and a few bleecher seats. Its a ****ing ****hole man.

They have full PP alright. Its suppose to be under construction now but no one seems to know if it is. Its part of the same development.

The Point Village is a different project to the Point Depot/O2 Venue.

I wasn't sure about the tower. I remember there were issues over the design, so I just assumed with Ireland being the way it is, it'd be lost in bureaucratic limbo for a few years.

It's going to be completely different to the way it was before. This time around they've actually put thought into it.

No it wasn't Bono he was talking about... why would he be explaining what the Point was to Bono who has been there many times. That was the only thing I remember Vedder saying to the crowd that night.

I will always call it The Point.

I think I am too old for any 13000 capacity venue
The ambassador, olympia, vicar st. et al are where its at for us oldies.

It was Bono. Its a joke. He basically says something along the lines of "and he was rambling on about this that and the other" and he asked "Whats the Point"....leading to something liek "the Point is an awesome venue in Dublin"

I've got one of the gigs on cd and he's not talking to Bono when he tell that story, but I wouldn't be surprised if he popped Bono in to jazz it up a little :D

just listened to the speils again, vedder june 2000

"talking about a farmer his son and a horse, one day the horse ran away and joined up with the wild horses, so now just him and the son ploughing the fields and its going slow and the neighbours feel sorry for the farmer now that his horse ran away and the man said you know whatever, then the horse comes back with all the wild horses and now the farmer has six horses. then the son is training one of the horses and falls off and breaks his leg up to his hip and the neighbours think that is really bad luck but the farmer says whatever, then a war breaks out and all the neighbours sons have to go except the son who has broken his leg"

at this part of the story a friend asks me "what the point" and i said "oh its this really great place to play in Dublin"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,969 ✭✭✭robby^5

Doesnt really mater what its called so long as they've done something about the crap sound in the place

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,055 ✭✭✭snickerpuss

I really can't see Dublin people calling it anything other than the point... Out in Coolock we still refer to Liz Delaney's as 'The Blacker' even though it must be over 20 years since it was called the Black Sheep.

Haha I was going to bring this up to show that people usually just ignore new names. Can't imagine anyone using the correct name. It's odd anyway because the apartments etc next to it are "Point Village".

I'll call it the O2. I'll still use Meteor as my provider.

I thought it was going to be called "The O2 Arena" which sounds much better in my opinion.

    +1 Indeed it is..

I never stopped calling it the Point Depot. It's an edgy name, reminds me of the Commitments era for some reason...

I just realised I got an o2 phone and unlocked it to use meteor but I get dibs on tickets. Woo!

Does it really mater what it is called? We are getting a brilliant venue for Dublin and if I have to call it the O2, so what! People are so stubborn in this town. For a few million I would rename myself! You will be calling it the O2 soon enough so start practising! Have a go; O2, O2, O2, see its not that hard!

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 35,945 Mod ✭✭✭✭dr.bollocko

Who cares? It just re-emphasises how soulless an environment the point always was and always will be. Can't have any kind of intimacy whatsoever for a concert by feckin packing in 13000 screaming people into an overheated indoor venue.
Sufjan Stevens in a pub in Melbourne. Now that was a gig. Frank Black in Vicar st. The Foos in D'Olympia..... The Point has always been a hole.
Wow. My ability to re-post the exact same thing time after time in the same thread borders on the super-human

    The Ambassador > everything

    It'll always be 'The Point'!

It's like 'Cineworld' on Parnell Square, I still call it 'UGC'.

Sorry dude, I can't lay my hands on the 2nd CD from that night which is where I think he tells it. If it turns up in the next day or two I'll let you know.

    What about 2006?

"In Seattle, i was talking with the singer of an irish band, and and, eh, and eh,and eh(:pac:), he was saying things about how when their band makes records that its like a horse, they're breeding a horse. I was there ' ok', and then he said 'we not only breed the horse, we want it to not just be in the race but we want it to win', and eh, then he said he didnt want rock and roll to become a niche. And i was like ' but whats the point?'....."Oh Eddie, the point's a great fuckin place to play in Dublin"

Edit- not sure hoe its gonna work with the new name
'but whats O2?'.... ' a colorless, odorless, tasteless diatomic gas!' (thanks wiki)

also think its gay with the whole preferential treatment bollocks

It's happened in almost every gig in every venue for years. Companies are sent blocks of tickets and give them out to their employees. Radio and tv stations recieve tickets and give them to staff and make money off of competitions for them. It's nothing new.

Meh, don't think it matters much. i'd say a lot of punters will end up calling it The o2.

Went to a baseball game in Pacific Bell Park in San Francisco once, which was called after the phone company of the same name. One of the people i was there with gave out about how it had replaced Candlestick Park as the new home for the SF Giants and how having a corporate name for the new stadium was against tradition etc. (just wiki'd it now and saw it's had two more name changes since!)

Really don't think it makes much difference - though i would be against renaming the likes of say, The Abbey or other venerable institutions that are very much identified with their brand names

It's only a name for Gods sake! People get very prickly about such things for no reason. The Point, the O2, the Mickey Mouse, the Baked Beans Arena who cares what it is called. The bottom line is we get a modern arena for top class acts. That's all that matters. Congratulations to Harry Crosbie for his foresight on this.

Get a life. The Point was a sh*thole. And everyone will be calling it the O2 within a year anyway, and you'll just sound like a spa refusing to change. Why all the lame rebellion? Why does it matter what it's called? It's getting revamped, and they're running more shows - that's a good thing, so what's the problem? Why the pathetic faux allegiance?

Nice try, but lame attempt. I'm saying it doesn't matter what it's called, and anyone who feels some faux loyalty to the old name is just a spa - the venue is better - that's all that matters.

No your poorly veiled attempt was a lame attempt. Mine was just a question of hypocracy..... you claimed it doesnt matter then advocated it to be called the O2 in the same post. Now go back to work, O2 are losing money by the minute with you being on here.....
