agree, no-one who can afford a decent car should be allowed to post asking for opinions, they are just showing off.

In fact everyone should work out everything for themselves and we will just close
    the motors forum.

You are a begrudger, saying you aren't in your post just makes it even more obvious.

Nothing to do with being spoilt - I've worked since I was 14 years old and I've paid for whatever car I have with my own graft.

My "generation" as you put it didn't quite make the kids of the Celtic Tiger so I don't really get that point either.

Finally, it's a motoring forum, nothing to do with bragging it's a mass production coupe with a big engine FFS, I'm hardly on bragging when all I am asking is views from other like minded (well some anyway!) car enthusiasts.

    Here's my ad on Carzone.

Does anyone else think this tread is a bit sad.

There he is with a very tasty, expensive car and he's wondering what cheaper car to replace it with. Seems to me, that like most kids of his generation they are spoiled rotten and can't make up their own minds what they want.

Before anyone suggests I'm begrudging him his toy's I'm not, fair play to anyone who can afford to buy the things they really want, I know I have all I want from what I can afford.

I just can't help but feel this is nothing more than a bragging exercise on the OP's behalf, but then agian I could be wrong.

Personally I would figure out what I like, find one that I can test / have a good look at, and buy whatever tick's all / most of the boxes for me.

OP. Good luck with your car hunting.

Mark changes his cars a lot (almost as much as i do :p) and he is normally interested in cars that appeal to many of the motor enthusiasts here. Personally its posts like these that keep me interested in the motoring forum, i dont car how many mpg someones new 320d does or which is better a passat or a mazda 6.

I think anyone who was followed Marks posts over the past few years wouldnt say he is bragging or boasting, like a lot of the rest of us he is genuinely interested in other peoples opinions.

Yet this accusation seems to be levelled at him every time,

thats whats sad in my book

I'm not sure if he put POA on the price to get it down near the cheaper ones or what, I was wondering myself - I might send him an email about it. Looking for around €65,000 for it anyway.

On your other point, I'm not that much of a company man :p

A 1 year old car that's already had 2 owners. Must be something wrong with it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,391 ✭✭✭jozi

Did anyone mention an Elise? Maybe a bit spartan but you'd have change left from selling your car going for a 2nd hand one, 1.8L will save you on tax, not sure about economy of these but surely better that a 335i? And great handling! There's a few other things less attractive to owning one but I could live with it :D

I'll crawl back under a rock if someone has mentioned it before.

As for showing of, must like it a lot, but i don't think that's what it is! I'm sure the boards motors masses have influenced you in most of your car buys?

Or it's an ex demo from a BMW dealer and is one of the best specced 335s on Carzone !

In fairness to the lads in Richford, they're used to selling stuff far more exotic than my car, if you're into a car, you'll call the dealer, you'll ask mileage, why has it two owners and the price.

Well when I got this car, I was torn between the A5 but the rest of the cars I've had I've pretty much bought with just my own mind.

I actually think the Elise is a great car and so different, has a blast with one of the M1 a few weeks back and although he couldn't get away for the engine size and the weight difference, it's gotta be praised. I wouldn't go for one myself though.

you prob would mark, but it doesn't look well listed at the bottom of the page of 2007 335s, the only one without a mileage or price.

I sent an email there about 10 mins ago with a question about the price asking could it be included.

possibly they do that with new ones they list? so people get on the phone to them straight away? hope it works out for you anyway..

MarkN... I had a big long reply written, but had started waffling about my own search...so deleted it.
Basically, the surmise of it is...... get the E46 M3 :D

The Boxter is a poor mans porsche. It says.... "look at me, I drive a porsche, but alas... I can't afford a real one!!!!"
It's also a very girlie looking car. <= I feel like this about all small convertibles.

The M3 is a subtle beast of a machine..... beautiful looking, beautiful to drive.
Go For It <= Although, try not to buy the one I'm currently looking at :D:D

I am sure they will shift it for you its a great car with a top spec. Will be keeping mine until the new year. Did you ask the dealer to try and source you a car that you want ?

I am astounded by the begrudgery some people have, MarkN has had many nice cars and likes to chage them more often than his underwear. Personally I have no problem spending big money on a car, I love to drive and like to have nice machines, just like the guys in the hardware forum like nice computers or the guys on the music forum like to have nice instruments to play.

Also I dont think how much you earn has much to do with it, anyone with a regular half decent income can get an expensive car (within reason), its just a matter of what you are willing to sacrifice to have it and the value you place on such objects.

Back on topic, I have to say the Boxter is not for me, like most porches its is a fantastic drive and has few if any faults, I do find it a bit feminine and the soft top would put me off. The e46 M3 is a lovely car but the image of a drug dealer is becoming more apparent as prices drop. I wanted one for the longest time and only when I went to purchase one in light of the new model I couldnt bring myself to it, its just too old looking now.

I would go for something a bit exotic like:

    http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/Nissan/350Z/Cabriolet-www.kellyscarcentre./1069930/

    http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/Jaguar/XK-Series/XK8-4.0/1131208/

    and of course the z4
    http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/BMW/Z4/3.0I-SI/1117799/

Always considered the MPS mazda 6 myself, by all accounts a very good car for the money.

If however you stick to your usual pattern MarkN I know of a really clean 2007 M5 with every possible extra for private sale. Its only got 7K on the clock and I can honestly says its the best car I have ever driven.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,197 ✭✭✭MarkN

38 - I have mentioned what I'd be looking for, they can probably get anything I want really.

What's weird for me is, the idea of a Boxster I like, the idea of any other soft top I don't. I think of wobble handling, heavy sloppy steering with little feedback... that's been my experience of driving soft tops in the past (the nicest being an A4 cab only though).

I'm sure the Z4 doesn't have a lot of those faults but to me it's very girly compared to the Boxster.

Fitz - love an M5.. someday! I really am going to stick to the budget I have in mind this time, I've even thought of a 1.6 Highline Golf and then I saw sense. :P

Best of luck with the sale MarkN but I'm just wondering whether or not someone spending €65,000 on a second hand 3-series is going to head straight for the M3 section.

I know you said that one of these sold from the garage you are dealing with 2 weeks ago but I know if it was me spending that kind of wedge on a 2nd hand motor it would have to be an M3.

Again, best of luck with the sale.

Yeh I saw that when I came back from lunch, I've asked for it to be changed.

Bigkev - I suppose a lot of people (even some here in this thread!) have said yeh the M3 is nice but it's now 'old'. You want the current 3 series coupe but you don't want the massive running costs of an E92 one, you get the next best thing which is the 335i. You'll probably get just as many people that will say I'd rather an E46 M3 than a newish plate but there'll be plenty of people out there that will think the former.

    Here's a thought for you.

Read recently in a AutoExpress that, alot of people in England are trading down from Ferrari's (etc.) to the new Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. I know you said you don't like Jap cars, and I would personally find it very hard to go from even a BMW to suped up Jap rep mobile, but there you go.

As for begrudgery, not my thing, fair play to you for buying what you can afford, even if you now need to trade down for awhile.

As I said earlier good luck, what ever you go for.

No harm in getting other people's opinion, but more often than not when it comes to cars, other people's opinion's aren't worth sh!t, just look at the amount of people on Boards who will catagorically dismiss a particular car / brand just because they don't like them. Unless you can get to talk to someone who has actually had experience of the particular brand / model, then all you are getting is a fairly useless opinion. IMO.

I don't think MarkN is boasting. He just likes to talk-out his car aspirations. And anyway, since when does admitting you need to go back to a cheaper car constitute as 'boasting'?

    Mmmm...couldn't agree with that.

The guys on here I really enjoy reading (like E92 for example) can just as easily talk about a Civic diesel as a top-line prestige motor.
