Waterford Crystal...made in Poland

My parent's had friends over from America for the past couple of weeks and they were leaving this weekend. My mum asked me to pick up some Waterford crystal for them as a leaving gift. She wanted to give them something Irish. Anyway, they opened it, were saying how lovely it is, turned it upside down to see a tiny made in Poland sticker on the bottom.

I'm quite annoyed by this! I rang up the shop who said it's widely known that Waterford Crystal is made in Poland, and that it's on the website, which I checked and can't find anything saying that. They also said it's Irish design..but it's a Jasper Conran piece and I'm pretty sure he's not Irish.

They just said to bring it back if I'm not happy but it was given away as a gift so I can't do that. I don't really know what I expect them to do but I'm really peed off about it as I think they're totally mis-selling their products!

They've been making the crystal in Poland for years now. Always thought it was a well known fact?

Waterford crystal is more a brand name these days. I got some Ralph Lauren slacks in Chicago with a nice "made in China" label on them. I did not know Waterford Crystal is made in Poland.
Guinness is brewed in Nigeria as well as Ireland etc

Seems to be a lot of stuff about it out on the interweb. Seems a lot of people will not buy it if its from Poland so i see a future where Irish Waterford Crystal will be more sought after and more expensive for the snobs.

Are you sure it didn't read "made in Ireland by Polish workers"?

Yep, I thought that was pretty well known.
They brew Guinnness Foreign Extra out there, it's strong at over 6% or 7% afaik.
Appearantly it's a big seller and you can see it Blood Diamond, the Leonardo Di Caprio film for example.

Heard somewhere that they import it from that brewry but don't know if that's true. Importing Guinness from Nigeria to sell in Ireland might get bad press you know.

Nearly he was Czech Charles Bacik (Ivanas Grandfather) and then Miroslav Havel.

Well I bought it in Kilkenny shop in Dublin which is supposed to be an shop selling Irish products. being Waterford Crystal I expeced it to be Irish designed or Irish made but it's neither.

Do they export the crystal they do actually make in Waterford to Poland then? ;)

Could chance it with the shop then I guess, especially if they claim all their goods are made in Ireland, they might have a loop hole saying their all made by Irish companys perhaps?

Is waterford crystal even an Irish company anymore?

sure Charleville cheese is made in Dublin!! lol

i find that very few brands are still homegrown, and if they are, you have to pay for them.

take Fender in the US for example. You can buy a guitar on the Fender website for either 300USD, or 1000USD. The exact same guitar. Only difference is, the 300USD version is manufactured in Asia, the 1000USD version made in the States...700USD is the cost for having a product built domestically!!

Oakley take a lot of pride in the fact that their sunglasses are all made in the US...you don't see that with companies like Waterford Crystal. If they don't shout it from the rooftops, you can presume it was made somewhere a long way from home...

are there any large Irish brand names that still manufacture their product on this lil island??

Nigerian guinness is a special guinness that is amazingly popular in Africa. They have started importing some of it now for the nigerian / african population in the country

Waterford Crystal is made in Waterford, Poland & Czech republic.

The master collection is the only range made in waterford - chandeliers, some vases and other specialist items (high price)

Tipperary Crystal is not made in tipperary - in fact their warehouse is in Diungannon Co. Tyrone (same palce as Tyrone Crystal) & offices in ballymount, dublin.

Galway crystal is not made here - it is cut here, and therefore can say made in Ireland. the blanks come from Czech Republic.

Same with a lot of pottery - blanks are brought in from Portugal & they are glazed here.

Unfortunately if all this was made in ireland (labour intensive), you'd be paying twice the price.

Don’t forget that Brazilian beef is imported here and packaged as Irish beef ;)

Nigerean Guinness is a completely different drink to Irish Guinness. There's no mistaking it.

It's a much stronger, fuller flavoured drink, and it's fizzy, as opposed to creamy.

Ironically, Nigerean Guinness' recipe has remained unchanged longer than any Guinness produced in Ireland. Guinness Draught is less than 50 years old.

I don't think so, it would have to be stated on the packaging as foods are supposed to be tracable to source.

Even the Dutch supermarkets sell irish beef :)
