Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi, could someone suggest a helpful book for a gardening novice who wishes to produce year round vegetables. I am also interested in a glasshouse/polytunnel, pros and cons please?

Joy Larkcom, Grow your Own Vegetables. Pure no-nonsense practicality.

Both Hessayon and Larkcom are excellent. My own favourite general reference is the "RHS Fruit and Vegetable Gardening" by Michael Pollock which has the advantage of covering fruit as well as vegetables and has good sections on soil, planning, crop rotation, composting etc.
I have a polytunnel (12ft x 20ft) and find it excellent for tender crops like tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, chillies during the summer and some standard crops during the colder winter months. It's also good for getting crops started early in the growing season before planting out. The main reasons I decided on a tunnel as against a glasshouse were 1. cost, 2. I wanted to cover a larger area than was feasible with a glasshouse - the poly I have gives me three beds each 3ft x 20ft. The disadvantages are 1. appearance, 2. the plastic covering will eventually need replacing.
