I've had an ongoing ping time problem with upc now for the last god knows how long. I've called them a bunch of times asking them could they look into it keep me updated and try and fix the error to which they said 'yea we will look into it and get back to you etc'. I was more than polite to them aswell.

i called them today (4 or so months down the line ) to ask is there any update and i get a blunt response along the lines of...

"we aren't going to change the routing of xx just for one person"

when i know a load of people who are also having the same problem. and have complained about it also. They are advertising them selves as a great service for gaming on the net when tbh its terrible. I've been with them for god knows howlong - infact i was one of the first 10 people to have cable in ireland. I've stuck with it for too long but this was the straw that broke the camels back.

one example of this is for me to go to a uk server, i go from dublin -> london -> amsterdam -> NEW YORK then to what ever server i want? Are you fking serious NTL?

Who would be the best company to go to? For me 3mb is grand. I just want a low pingtime to the uk and mainland eu. A low contention ratio would be nice.

    Any advice?

    Cheers

    im a gamer too

    my ping with eircoms were very low and consistent. 10ms Ireland / 20-25 ms uk / 30 -38 nl / 40 - 45 de ( all dos winxpSP2 )

Can you get smart? If so i would get them, they have the lowest ping times for dsl in ireland

gave them a call and they said they wont be adding to their network in the next 6 months.. i've looked into BT 8mb, looks good! They are on the eircom network arent they?

BT have 2 different products - the 8mb you mention is LLU (only available in certain unbundled exchanges) and then they also resell eircom's products which for a residential package currently max's out at 3mb

As a matter of interest, which server(s) were you having problems with?

im able to get the 8mb, i called them. Is LLU a bad thing? its content ratio is 24:1 - thats average i suppose.

there's 2 ips that my peers from ie/uk ping 20 to. I used to ping 10 to one of them before the UPC/chello incident

LLU = Local Loop Unbundling. In simple terms it means you're completely free from Eircom as you're using BT's own equipment at the other end.

BT chose to use ADSL2+ for their LLU equipment so if you're on an LLU exchange you shouldn't have to worry about contention at all.

77.74.193.141 is unfortunate alright. UPC could do with peering with a few more carriers to improve local/western european connectivity.

98.172.66.84 is in the states so you'll never get <100ms pings to it, no matter which isp you're with.

I'm after having the same problem with this IP: 193.200.158.101

Now, can somebody tell me why it's logical to go via New York when you're going from Ireland to the UK?

That's a joke if you ask me...

its actually a uk server tho. other irish and uk connections manage a 20 ping to it!

i agree. but they wont change that for the 1 person who has complained about it. I've made my decision to leave NTL. TV and BB.

the fun part of it for me will be chopping the pipe that i let them run along my backwall in exchange for the years free internet i got back in the day. We signed nothing that said they could do it, it was a verbal agreement over the phone. They can fo if they think that thats going to stay there, they can move it elsewhere. i dont care if the neighbors have no internet - im not sitting idly by while they treat me like sh1t.

98.172.66.84 is in phoenix, arizona in the states. It's not in the uk.

If you damage UPC plant you'll still be liable for criminal damage.

I'm having terrible problems (6pm to 12pm) with high ping and crap download/upload speeds. Only have it a few weeks. Phoned yesterday and was told i would need to be moved to another line (excuse my lack of correct terminology) Told it may take a few weeks as they may have to move a lot of people. Is this the same as your case, and do you reckon I'm just been fobbed off?

Completely different issue altogether there... My connection is perfect all the time! It's just that when the OP or myself try to connect to some UK servers, we are routed via Amsterdam the New York!

You're just having problems in your local area (which UPC will hopefully fix shortly).
