Has anyone else been getting spam PMs? I've got a couple recently, along the same lines as spam posts on forums. If I come across one on a forum, I usually click the Report Post icon to let the mods know about the user/thread. Is there something similar that can be set up for PMs? Since PMs don't fall under a forum, and…

I've added an extensive range of Chinese IP ranges to the block list (that's where the spam accounts originated).

I got one from shyoureov (user already banned but the PMs were not nuked).

As for blocking extensive Chinese IP ranges, at least one legitimate boards.ie user is (was?) in Beijing. These attacks could come from anywhere. It seems to me the problem here is that new accounts with 0 posts can send multiple PMs. How about disabling PM functionality for accounts newer than X days and/or with fewer than Y posts and then rate limiting until the user has sufficient history to be trusted?

Not an option, adverts.ie would be crippled by any such restrictions currently.

Signal/Noise ratio of China is too poor, it is unfortunate that it will affect some legitimate users, but it is the best option of a bad bunch right now.

Doesn't the block list just prevent new sign ups from those ip ranges, so existing users are fine?

No, it prevents access flat out at httpd level. vBulletin doesn't support CIDR notation range bans and I'd rather not manually type out thousands of IP addresses.

Could just block access to register.php I guess though, rather than the whole site.

Admins can delete pms. If a pm spammer is brought to their attention then they usually delete all the pms the spammer sent.
