I was over in London at the w/e "helping" a friend spend his hard-earned bike-to-work cheque (£1,000). He ended up getting a Specialized Tricross 2008 Single Speed.
I'd never seen this bike before, it's well worth a look: it was setup with cycle-cross tyres (swapped for pink sidewall Armadillos), and a granny's gear ratio / freewheel (swapped for fixed 3:1), but otherwise, a good commuting bike: drop bars, carbon blade fork, loads of mudguard clearance, extra brakes levers on the tops, V-brakes.
With the bike2work thing, we just wandered around the shop, buying stuff until the £1,000 mark was reached - sweet...

That's been out for a while, it's actualy the cheapest bike in the Tricross range (£449 RRP.) Basically a single speed cyclocross bike.
