Was going to post something similiar, looking to swap my 02 Passat for a Saab 1.9TID, not many around thou which is the problem. Alot of 2.2TID but I dont want to pay the tax on the engine size. Drove one there last week and they are lovely to drive, very smooth

I used to have an old Saab 900 (generation before 9-3 but is essentially the same) and really liked it. Spacious, quick and safe. Was getting 25-30 mpg mixed but it was old.
Reason I got rid was that the timing chain was on it's way out and the repair would cost about 1500 euro, which is more than I paid for it to start with. It's said that the chain can give in at aprox 150K, which was exactly when mine started acting up.
Was really sad to see it go, but got a S40 instead :)

    Have a look at http://www.saabcentral.com/forums/index.php?

    +1 on the S40!

that 900 saab had the old slant 4 job, unless it was a diesel right? The current 9-3s use the GM petrols as far as I know - and I reckon would be more reliable..

OP we did this 9-3 thread only yesterday if its any use?:

    I have an 04 9-3 aero, the 2.0T,
have it over 2 years now and have had no problems with it since then,
except for the battery dying about 2 months ago,
mine returns about 22-24mpg on average up around the 30's on long trips but the 1.8t should do alot better than that,
as said above saabcentral is a good site for info,

if you like it go for it,
    nice to be different,

by the way have heard of problems with 2.2tid, so if you are getting a diesel get the 1.9tid, will probably cost a little bit more but would be worth in the long run,
it's meant to be a much better engine too
