Changing the phone number associated with an iphone - what's the best option?

Hi apologies if the following is a bit convoluted, but I have a question and keep getting different answers from O2:

My brother has been using my O2 bill-pay nokia phone (with my sim) for a long time and wants to keep the number (as everyone he knows has it), but also wants to get an iphone. I use a work phone and we haven't got around to changing the phone number into his name. :o

What is the best way for him to get an iphone with the number that is registered to my name ?

    - if we first transfer the number so it is registered to his name, my understanding is that he won't be due an upgrade and can't get an iphone for a while. Should I get an iphone first - I am due an upgrade ( i.e. the number that he uses that is in my name is due an upgrade) but we want to put it in his name - is it possible to transfer the number to him AFTER I get the upgrade and after I have signed a new contract?
Is it possible for him to sign up to a totally new iphone contract and then change the number associated with it at a later time, if I sign something to say that I agree to "give" him that number?

O2 seem to be giving me conflicting info. ANy help would be much appreciated.:)

Get the iphone upgrade and then get a change of ownership into his name. A change of ownership is subject to credit scoring.

You could also switch the exiting one to prepay (if out of contract), change the registration into his name on prepay (quick phone call) and then have him sign up onto billpay and buy an iphone. This can all be done in the shop if you both go in and if he brings a passport or driving license that's in date and a bill or a bank statement posted out to his address and dated within the last 3 months.

Hope this helps - try to go in between around 10 and 5 to avoid any potential problems.

Thanks a lot for the advice. Think I might transfer to prepay and do it that way as it seems a bit more straightforward
