The wife likes the color, I like the mileage, but its priced well over other 2003 models, any tips?

    Cheers

It's a buyer's market. Offer him 8 and start from there. If he flat out refuses then tell him to give you a shout if his situation changes.

I make an offer of €10,600 but i wouldn;t pay more then €11,300. The owner expects to make a loss on the price its advertised but i think if you offered €8,000 he might get insulted, i know i would if someone did.

You shouldnt be paying any more for those nasty seat covers anyway:D.It is well overpriced, though and especially considering its a private sale.I'd say your best bet is to tell it like it is and offer him slightly below whats its actually worth. If he wont budge, tell him the choice of cars that are available to you and tell him to be real.Give him your number and you could get a call back sooner that you think. The markets dead at the mo and he wont get too much genuine interest like you especially, at the price he has it advertised

Handy hints guys, I have learnt something already :-)

steve06, I tried to get in touch with that seller, but the number doesn't seem to work, nor did (s)he respond to my email.

There seems to be another bogus ad here: http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/Toyota/Avensis/car/1122668/

ad says the color is gold, but the pic doesn't match & emails bounce back.

I would be very careful with that ad, the phone number is a similar format to other "bargain" motors which turned out to be scams. I can't find the scam thread but that thread should be made a sticky.

That one looks almost too good to be true so if it were a scam, it wouldnt surprise me at all

OP, the car is worth about €9k.

I wouldn't go a penny over that tbh.

    dont haggle. its just awkward.

A max of 9K is pretty much the price I had in mind from gut feeling.
But would the same hold true if I decide to buy a similar car from a dealer? Does a dealer warranty & peace of mind count for a few 100's more on that price?

@Tá;ck - most dealers I visited have asked me at some point - "make me an offer and we'll sort something out". That's why I'm posting to understand how to handle this!

    It depends.

If you have the car checked (by AA for example) before you buy it should be OK. From very recent experience I can tell you that a warranty from a reputable garage is worth its weight in gold.

That is a scam. They just stole the photos off another advert on carzone.ie

Back to the original question. That car is overpriced. A 03 Avensis 1.6 new shape can be bought from dealers for less than €12k these days. Shop around, there are plenty of these cars out there.

Privately, about 9 is the ballpark.

I wouldn't touch touch anything without a full service history. Better safe than sorry!
