Am getting a popcorn hour steamer next week and need to put a 2.5" ide drive into it for HD movies/files etc

If I buy one of these 320GB WD passport - can I open it up and use the IDE drive inside ?? for 115euro.

    thx

The Popcorn Hour takes a 3.5" drive, not a 2.5" one. It also needs to be an IDE (PATA) drive, not a SATA one, and I'm not sure that your external 2.5" USB drive is an IDE drive.

    See: http://www.networkedmediatank.com/viewtopic.php?p=24004

Beware WD drives as the mounting holes are offset.

You should probably buy a drive like this:

...for half the cost of your proposal.

(I use an iStar HD box with network streaming - have the drives in another room!)

    thanks turly,

I just thought after reading a few threads on the nmt forum that a lot of folks were putting in 2.5 instead of 3.5 ide drives.
Forget the wd option so :)

They were saying that the 3.5 were noisey enough but the 2.5 were quiet as could be.
Will also have a media pc and a future nas but wanted an internal for the bittorrent client it has on it.

You'd need some kind of adapter to go from 2.5" to 3.5" IDE connectors (different sizes), plus I suspect - but don't know for sure - that there might be some kind of bodgery needed to physically mount the 2.5" drive.

Dabs.ie has a far better selection of IDE drives than komplett:

A 3.5" Hitachi or Seagate 500GB drive will cost you around 80 euro inc. postage.

Edit: as for quietness, I can't really say - it might still be worth getting a (SATA) 2.5" drive and a SATA - IDE converter. Has this been mentioned on the NMT forums? The IDE 2.5" drives are not really cost-effective now - all the manufacturers are making SATA drives.

for the moment I will use an old 200gb 3.5 ide I have at home and see what happens.

will upgrade change to a 2.5 ide/sata eventually.

just all happy getting it during the week and a new gaming rig to build :D

    thx again,
    k
