Those 'old' GTX 980 Ti SLI cards gave me a very respectable 3d Mark Extreme score of 16377 - no slouch even against a pair of newer GTX 1070s :D

    Cards were @1400MHz Core
CPU was an Intel 5960x @4.4GHz

    Untitled_zpsaeoxorgu.png

Actually forget the 1070 SLI comparison, my old GTX 980 Ti cards seem to fare very nicely against the 1080 SLI scores from Guru3d.com

The 970 is nice card at 1080p :) - provides a very decent gaming experience.

I built a system back in Jan for the son of a friend of mine, I used a factory overclocked GTX 970 and an AOC 1080p G-Sync 144Hz TN panel / monitor. He was using an Xbox One... needless to say he could really appreciate the difference.

Robert. Is that a tablet to the left of your screen or a very compact screen?
Looks like a monitor in portrait.

Yeah it's a screen in portrait. Tons of webpages are designed for vertical viewing. I also use it for manga and helps with streaming.

Have the same case myself. It is massive, but a pleasure to work with if upgrading and the larger case does allow for better airflow/cooling if you aint going down the WC path

Not the greatest photo in the world (and there's a few bits missing from the photo - like another mouse mat) but...

    GYTC8RC.jpg

Mine on the right, hers on the left.

    Mine: Corsair 600C, Asrock Z170 Gaming K6, i5 6400, 16gb Corsair DDR4, Asus Strix GTX 970
    Hers: Antec isk600, ASRock H170M-ITX/AC, i5 6400, 16gb Corsair DDR4, Asus Strix GTX 970

    Monitors are a Samsung SyncMaster S27A650D, 2x Dell P2314H 23" and eh... 20" I can't remember what the other one is >.>

Some cheapo monitor arms would give you a whole load more desk space Challenge.

As a long-time user of cheap (and not-so-cheap) monitor arms, +1. They're fantastic.

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

Might look into it alright... although I'm not sure what I'd do with the extra space anyway :D

    Any suggestions for ones?

This is the one the girlfriend uses.

    This is what I use.

Hmm... Looks squeezed together a bit.. Might work for the 2 dells but I dunno. Maybe some single-arm stands might work better...

I'll throw up some actual PC pics later... the ISK600 is a bit of a squeeze with the 970!

How do you mean? She's using it to hold 24"+22", and there's be plenty of room for two 24"s.

Functionally it does what you'd expect. The monitors stay where they're supposed to, and you can move them by, well, moving them.

There are two main negatives - and they're the reason it's so cheap.
    1) There's no simple height adjust (like above). You need to loosen a screw and move the monitors where you want, then tighten again.
    2) There isn't a great Z-axis range. That is, you can't move the monitors towards/away from you much, because of the length of the arms.

Both of these are minor points, and only really applicable if you move the monitors around much in your daily work. I use my desk for some DIY stuff - some soldering, model making, etc. - so I like being able to push my monitor out of the way, hence the Ergotron arm. If you just want your monitors up off the desk, the cheaper kit will do all that very nicely.

Actually sounds perfect for my needs! Thanks for the info!

Ordered, for what ever reason when I was looking at them earlier there was not free delivery and now there is. So for ~€30 all in it's worth the punt :D

    No problem.

Little assembly advice though: Clamp+desk, rail+clamp, monitor+bracket, lastly bracket+rail. Any other way than this and you'll end up trying to precisely align some pretty bulky/heavy things, and it gets annoying quick.

I'll be coming back to this when it arrives..

I'll also be coming back with some pictures :P

If you own your place wall mounted can be even better than a desk arm but its not always feasible. I have to revert to the latter now due to moving.

Oh, I meant that I could probably use it for the 2x 23" monitors in the middle. But I can't imagine it working too well with the 27" and 23" with the difference between the two monitors...

Maybe a single arm for the 27" would free up a huge amount of space by itself though.

Retired my old 3930k 980sli system. Sold to a nice chap on adverts. I wanted to go for a VR setup. After a few days with VR, and as a 20 year veteran of PC gaming, I can honestly say that VR is the game changer.

    New system
    X99 aII
    I7 6800k @4600 on all cores
    H100i
    Corsair 400c
    Corsair modular PSU
    EVGA 1080 gtx SC
    16gb DDR4 2666 Corsair Vengence
    SSD from my old system a 850 Evo 500gb, a 840 pro 256 gb, 3gb 7200 Baracuda, 2gb backup drive.
    HTC VIVE
    Asus gsync PG278Q 144 mhz
Rotel RA-11 fed by optical from onboard sound. Q Acoustics 3010 bookshelf speakers.

    Second system
A little Dell Optiplex 780 from Atlantic IT. If you dont know its a adverts shop that sells refurbished PC;s. I have a bunch of them in work and they are great. Cheap as chips, workstation grade reliability. I stuck a SSD in it and its a grand machine for server tasks, backup and cloud sync to the network storage and watching youtube. Its a Core Duo 4gb ram on onboard graphics.

    Pardon crap phone pics.

Build this for someone on adverts. Haven't actuallys sent him pictures of the finished product yet so this will probably do :)

He wanted a machine for 1 - 1.1k. It's a Phanteks Pro M, H110M, i5-6500, 8GB 2133mhz, iChill GTX1070, 120GB SSD/1TB HDD, 430W 80+. Same case as I have, except in Gunmetal. It has to be hands down the finest case I've ever worked with - have used it in about 5 builds now to date.
