How do I pimp my URLs?

I've seen URLs on a page that would be like "http://whatever/get/12345" and would return a page. Is there a way to redirect that parameter "12345" to a script?

I was thinking about using mod_rewrite but it seems like a bit of a hack

mod_rewrite is exactly what you need.

http://www.whatever.com/get.php?id=12345

RewriteEngine on 
RewriteRule /get/([0-9]+) /get.php?id=$1

= http://www.whatever.com/get/12345

Guessing that should work once you've inserted that code into a .htaccess file

I have a shop installed at www.myshop.com/shop. Currently I have a 301 redirect set up to redirect visitors from www.myshop.com to www.myshop.com/shop. All the urls to products etc will look like www.myshop.com/shop/product1.html

I'm swithing hosting providers and want to take to opportunity to move the shop to www.myshop.com as I hear it's more SEO friendly. My question is, how do I preserve all the old URLs which google has indexed? I need to redirect all requests for www.myshop.com/shop/* to www.myshop.com/*

What code do I need in my .htaccess file?
